When Mark Lunt heard that Milpa’s mom’s house burned down in the Bradley Creek wildfire in Canada, having just barely been evacuated from the Canyon Rd. wildfire himself, he knew this community had to show up for them.

With 10 minutes and the help of Milpa’s sister, Margo packed up the car and fled the home she had lived in for the last 14 years. Mark felt that initial panic as they hurried to evacuate, but him and his family were fortunately able to return to their home the next morning.

Margo was not.

In 2021, the Island Market reached out to USU’s History Department in hopes of uncovering some of the history of our wonderful little store. Lecturer Rebecca Anderson decided it would be a valuable project for the students of her Public History class to work on. During the spring semester of 2022, eight undergraduate students were briefed on the project, and they set to work sifting through documents, slides and newspaper articles for any information they could find.

Through their research, we were able to unveil a nearly complete history of the Island Market’s timeline over the last century, resulting in a beautiful online exhibit with USU’s Digital Exhibits initiative.

In May of 2026, we were thrilled to find another long-lost piece of our history when we were visited by the Croshaw family. Around 1938, the Croshaw family lived in and run what was then known as “Croshaw’s Grocery”. We were so thrilled to meet the family, and get a chance to thank them for keeping this store going. Although the ownership has changed hands many times over the years, one thing has stayed the same through the decades; the commitment to this neighborhood and its residents.
