Did you see how studies show an extract being a powerful natural chemotherapy? Let’s talk about how to extract the active compounds from various plants!

Fresh herbs are an important part of the traditional Mediterranean Diet. That’s especially true in Italy, where an observational study found just how healthy they may be. The researchers found an amazing 44% risk reduction for melanoma among those who consumed fresh herbs (rosemary, basil, sage and parsley) at least 4 times weekly. Rosemary was the most potent, with a 60% risk reduction among regular consumers. Intriguingly, separate lab studies have shown extracts were highly toxic to human melanoma cells in a test tube, killing up to 95% of the cells. All this points to fresh as being an important part of a varied and healthy diet—especially when the summer sun is out! Sources: Pubmed ID 26176704, 18621803.

My Santa Fe herb garden is starting to wake up, and I couldn’t be more excited. Planting your own herbs is one of the simplest ways to bring fresh flavor and healing into your kitchen. Basil, rosemary, mint, oregano, they’re not just tasty, they’re packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Plus, there’s something deeply satisfying about stepping outside and snipping what you need. It connects you to your food, your health, and the earth.
