The Varnish is the home of Penny Pound, where Eric Alperin and Cedd Moses desired large, clear, hand-cut ice for their bar. What began small has grown, servicing bars, restaurants, grocery stores, liquor stores, and homes all
across Southern California. Ice is an integral part of every beverage and Penny Pound’s aim is to elevate that experience. Using Clinebell machines (originally designed for ice sculptors) 300 pound blocks are frozen over the course of 3-5 days, forcing out impurities and leaving cleaner, denser, and clearer ice its place. Human hands wield chainsaws and bandsaws to turn these massive blocks into smaller, manageable sizes for consumption. The goal: a better beverage
Our focus is the ROCK, designed to sit taller in the glass so as to avoid a piece of ice rocketing towards your teeth with each sip. Rounding out our FAB FOUR are the NORMANDIES (wider), STONES (shorter) and SPEARS (for long drinks). Over the years we have evolved to provide beverage programs - and all kinds of drinkers - with the ice they so desire. DRAFT and PEBBLES round out the main line up and if so inclined, try your hand at a CINDERBLOCK and cut the ice yourselves. Penny Pound strives to met each and every customer’s needs like their own. With over 6 decades of experience in the hospitality industry, we strive to be personable through excellent customer service and dedicated quality control. A small family of inspired individuals, we aim to provide knowledge and support through the entire ordering and delivering process but a pillar of our business is the humanity that goes into each end product.
