As spring arrives, the APIFM Food Roots Harvest team is excited to announce the investment in our 2026 van branding efforts! In-line with our Asian and Pacific Islander communities, we draw upon the cultural roots and significance of the spring season which signifies growth, renewal and the rejuvenation of life in China and East Asia. It is deeply rooted in agricultural cycles, signaling the end of winter’s dormancy and the return of warmth and new life.

This investment is important not only to the Food Roots Harvest team but also to our partners and the communities we serve. Our partners and communities can now easily see us delivering locally grown produce and rescued produce to the underserved communities in the greater L.A. area.

Lastly, The APIFM/FRH team was extremely impressed with the partnership and workmanship of the team located in the Los Angeles area. The owner (Hector) and his team were timely and professional throughout the entire process. The graphics quality is excellent and we are happy to work with them in the future should the opportunity arise.

APIFM’s Food Roots Harvest team joined our partners at LA Food Collective for our official 2026 power equipment training day! The training was held by Overton Safety Training Inc. and their wonderful and knowledgeable trainer who held the in-person training session for all of us. This training course covered Class 1, 4, and 5 forklifts as well as electric pallet jacks. With both classroom and hands-on training, we all successfully completed the course, setting ourselves up for future success! This will pay dividends in operational efficiency and timeliness.

Seasonal Produce Highlight: G*i Lan (Chinese Broccoli)!

April is a peak time for spring produce in many Asian communities, characterized by tender greens, early shoots, and the arrival of specific tropical fruits. Key seasonal items often featured in Asian markets and traditional cuisines include bamboo shoots, long beans, bitter melon, and flowering rapeseed (nanohana).

Today’s spring highlight is G*i Lan!

G*i lan (Chinese broccoli) is a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable packed with vitamins A, C, and K, along with calcium, iron, and fiber. Its key health benefits include boosting immune function, supporting bone health, and promoting healthy digestion. It is also high in antioxidants like beta-carotene, which help prevent age-related vision loss.

🌿 Seasonal Produce Highlight 🌿

March marks a transitional period in seasonal produce, bridging the gap between hearty winter root vegetables and fresh, early spring greens. Befofre we transition into early spring greens, we want to highlight our favorite radish! Daikon radish (meaning “big root” in Japanese) is a cornerstone of East and South Asian cuisine, revered not only for its versatile, mild, and slightly sweet flavor but also for its cultural significance in health and tradition. This long, white winter radish is widely used across Japan, China, Korea, and Vietnam in raw, pickled, and cooked forms. Stay tuned for next Friday’s seasonal produce highlight! 🌺

🌿 Seasonal Produce Highlight 🌿

Taro leaves are a true staple in the Pacific Islander diet. Not only are they delicious, they’re also a powerhouse of nutrition! 💚 They’re packed with antioxidants like vitamins C and A and folate. They support heart health by helping manage blood pressure, aid in weight management due to high fiber/low-calorie content, and offer anti-inflammatory and potential anticancer properties.

⚠️ Note: Must be fully cooked to neutralize toxins.

Stay tuned for next month’s seasonal produce highlight!🌺

Local Bok Choy is a great vegetable to incorporate into your daily diet! Its mild peppery taste makes it a delicious replacement for cabbage/greens in any recipe! The Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College had Bok Choy as the Harvest of the Month earlier this year, where the students were introduced to Bok Choy and got to eat a stir-fry with it. Here are some thoughts the students and the teachers shared. Find more recipes on our blog!
