Hi!! Jen here from Potluck.

Potluck wouldnโ€™t exist without my mom (my Umma!) ๐Ÿงก Growing up, it was just the two of us and I was blessed with a lot of homemade Korean food. I attribute all my food-related things to her: my spice tolerance, my palate, and nearly all of my cravings.

Any second gen kid knows thereโ€™s friction in adjusting to a new country and culture. I was always a little too Korean to feel fully American and a little too American to feel fully Korean. We spoke a mix of Korean and English to each other. Still do.

I remember eating ssamjang and rice after church (โ€œIsnโ€™t it too salty? Too ์งœ?โ€ my mom would ask. Yes, but it was good). Iโ€™d bring rice and seaweed to school for lunch and kids would call the seaweed black paper. โ€œItโ€™s good!โ€ I told them. Still is.

This is also my first Motherโ€™s Day as a mom myself and Iโ€™ve learned firsthand just how hard the job is. More grateful than ever to my mom and all moms and mom figures for caring for us while doing a million other things that need to get done.
