Have you ever wondered if the produce sold in CA Certified Farmers’ Markets (CFMs) is actually local? If so you might like to know this:

The CA Department of Ag visits every farm selling in CFMs, and they list every crop, in every variety, that the farmer grows.

They also visit every farmers’ market—regularly—to check that farmers’ are only selling produce they’re “certified” to grow.

If a farmer gets caught selling produce they didn’t grow, they are banned from all markets in the state.

We once saw a farmer get scolded for selling edible weeds! He argued that EVERY organic farm had purslane and lambs quarters between their rows. The agent made him list the weeds on his certification!

CA Certified Farmers’ Market are the real deal. And yes, local matters.

Cherry season is short. Our love for cherries is not. 🍒

Armed with a DIY cherry-pitting fork, we pitted a mountain of cherries and cooked them down into a quick (jam? compote? jelly?) situation.

We’ll be enjoying cherry season long after it’s gone. 😋

Market Match is a simple and successful program that makes fresh produce affordable for CalFresh (SNAP) shoppers.

When shoppers spend their CalFresh benefits in a farmers’ market,* they get a dollar-for-dollar match, which can ONLY be spent on fresh fruits and vegetables.

$15 becomes $30 for families in need and the sale goes to small local farmers.

Despite the program’s success, Market Match was not included in the governor’s proposed FY2026-2027 budget. As it currently stands, funding will run out in early 2027.

But OUR VOICES ARE POWERFUL! State legislature representatives listen to their constituents! Market Match funding was nearly cut in 2025, but market shoppers spoke up and the program was funded in full! DONT SLEEP ON THIS!

3 easy steps (5 min tops) will make  a big difference!

1. Sign the petition
2. Send a letter
3. Call your Reps!

You can do all three through the links in our Bio!

And if you’re a CalFresh customer who’s benefited from Market Match, please share your story at: savemarketmatch.org/stories
