I never thought I’d have to stop my dog from drowning in water that didn’t even cover his legs...

But here is the face of a dog who almost did just that.

Yes - you read that correctly. I saved my dog from nearly dying in 6 inches of water.

It all happened about an hour ago: Moose was cooling off in his little dog pool when he dropped one of his toys into the water. Unfortunately, it was not buoyant, so it immediately sank to the bottom.

Now, a normal dog probably would’ve accepted the loss & moved on.

Not Moose.

He decided he could not continue existing until this toy was recovered.

So he shoved his entire head underwater & started trying to grab it. But every time he got close, the toy would scoot just barely out of reach.

And instead of coming up for air & trying again like a creature with basic survival instincts… he just kept his whole head submerged while spinning in circles chasing it around the pool.

At first I watched for a minute because surely - SURELY - no animal could be dumb enough to actually drown itself in, essentially, a puddle. Even the stupid ones usually have at least a tiny sliver of self-preservation buried somewhere deep inside them.

Apparently not.

Because Moose can only focus on one thing at a time, and today it was:

1. retrieve toy
or
2. continue living

This time, he chose toy.

After what felt like forever, I realized I was moments away from witnessing the world’s dumbest water-related fatality, so I finally intervened & snapped him out of it before he accidentally removed himself from the gene pool.

Against all odds, he survive yet another day…

Until the next life-threatening situation inevitably presents itself in the form of a household object or minor inconvenience.

He’s okay now, but I fear evolution has officially given up on him.
