In 1959, the colossal St. Lawrence Seaway, the worlds longest manmade inland water route, was completed. Over 2000 miles long, international ships could now make their way all the way from the Atlantic ocean, over the Niagara falls and into the heart of the country - the Great Lakes Region. Effectively lake coastal cities such Detroit, Duluth, and Chicago were to become oceanic shipping ports.

The promise was big, but the rewards were small. The disaster that followed, was one of, if not the greatest ecological disaster in North America, as invasive species that hitched a ride on international shipping boats caused the widespread collapse of native fish populations. The disaster even threatened the entire regions water supply, clogging intake pipes for drinking water, and cost billions of dollars in repairs and cleanup costs.

The seaway was a financial disaster, and only met a fraction of it's goals. The locks built were too small for international shipping container ships that were invented only a few years later, and quickly became an obsolete system. Today, all of the product shipped up the seaway, could easily be shipped by truck and train for a fraction of the cost of what it takes to clean up the ecosystem.

But still, it remains open.
