“We love local farmers markets; it’s a wonderful place to gather people and create community, and we particularly owe a lot to the ones that support live music. We are grateful that it’s always been a space where we’ve been able to polish our craft and to be able to add to the atmosphere that is already there, which is always so positive and uplifting .”

Futuretime String Band will be at market Saturday!!

Keala and Lino will be bringing tunes from the future and maybe even teach us a few things about our past...we mean present.

The Futuretime String Band is an old-time and bluegrass musical duo that blends traditional folk music with futuristic, cross-cultural, and diverse acoustic elements.

See you on Saturday!

Hello Market Friends and Michigan Music Lovers! Find us Every Saturday 9-12 at the Wagoner Center.
Last week's Market Tote trivia answer: The band was M-23 Strings — Paul Kirchner, Kurt Westie, Marlene Wood, and William Apostol (Billy Strings). First person to tell us the answer at the Manistee market booth this Saturday gets a free market tote!

Market Music Memories: On June 30, 2012, a young musician named William Apostol — aka Billy Strings — played the Homegrown Music Stage at the Manistee Farmers Market for the first time with his friends in M-23 Strings, making a little Manistee music history.

All season, in honor of our 25th silver season, we're celebrating memories from the market's journey — the ups, the downs, and the joy of this community.

Back in 2012, Paul Kirchner — Michigan's own Bluegrass and Banjo Man — had just formed M-23 Strings in Traverse City, and Billy Strings played his very first farmers market gig with the group. The band went on to release their album New Highways later that year.
The story goes that Paul picked Billy up early that morning after a midnight shift at a Traverse City resort. By the time they reached the market, Billy was still trying to catch a few more minutes of sleep in the backseat — until Paul strapped the guitar on him and the band hit the Homegrown Stage at 9am sharp. The sound that filled the air that morning is still remembered fondly today.
Manistee has seen many chapters of music history since, and there are more to come. Since 2002, the market has supported local homegrown music alongside our farmers and artisans — and at 25 seasons strong, that spirit is very much alive.
That day, a young man came to the market as William Apostol and left as Billy Strings.
Billy — congrats on the journey, and thank you for the music, then and now.
From all of us at the Manistee Farmers Market: Strum On.
Local. Food. Art. Live Music — let's keep speaking Mother Nature's universal languages.

In another twist of fate and some Manistee Cosmic Connections once again the stars align... the 5 piece bluegrass band Red Thyme is coming to your market this saturday! 💫

When asked what does a Farmers Market mean to you?

Hals Smedstad (Red Thyme front person) gave an answer that rings true to all of us in this community...

"To us, I think Farmers Markets mean so much more than a place where you can get some groceries. To us, it's a safe haven for clean food, without having to worry about dangerous contaminations, chemicals, or unsustainable agricultural practices. You know what you're getting, you see where it's coming from, you shake the hand that picked your product. Farmers markets, especially here in Michigan, are some of the only really 'safe' places to get food now."

Red Thyme Bluegrass is described by one music reviewer and fan saying "These folks are young, but their music reaches back before the days of sensory overload to a sound that is out of time and yet terrifyingly relevant to those of us living on this rock hurtling through space. Marked by clear harmonies, sharp instrumental interplay, and natural chemistry, powered by both Bluegrass and modern acoustic techniques, Red Thyme meets you where you're at on the generational bridge and takes your hand to go forward together."

Always fresh live local music on the Homegrown Music Stage and produce baked goods and artistry on market row...
