🌱 Farmers to Markets Program – September 10 Distribution 🌱

Another week of the Farmers to Markets Program brought fresh, locally grown food directly from the Manistique Farmer & Artisan Market into our community. This week’s harvest from Demers Farm / Ganga Rai was distributed to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in downtown Manistique and included Swiss chard, two varieties of kale, red potatoes, onions, beefsteak and cherry tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, acorn squash, eggplant, and pumpkins.

We’re also excited to celebrate another strong market week for Furlong Creek Farm, which once again reached its guaranteed sales threshold through direct customer purchases. That means their products were purchased by market shoppers - exactly the kind of farmer success this program was created to encourage.

A special thank you to Kay, Jan, Meladee, Ed, and the entire St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry team for partnering with us. Their work helps provide food assistance to individuals and families throughout our area, and we’re grateful that Farmers to Markets can add fresh, locally grown food to what is available through their pantry.

Farmers to Markets, an initiative of Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development - MDARD and Michigan Farmers Market Association, creates a guaranteed level of sales for participating farms. When that threshold isn’t met through market-day purchases, eligible products are purchased through the program and distributed to community partners. It’s a model that puts farmers first while simultaneously expanding fresh food access, reducing food waste, and building stronger connections between farms and the communities they serve.

Thank you to Demers Farm, Furlong Creek Farm, St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, MDARD, MIFMA, and everyone helping make these connections possible.

We’ll be back next week as another harvest makes its way from our participating farmers to its next community destination. 💚

🌱 Farmers to Markets Program – September 3 Distribution 🌱

This week, fresh locally grown food from Demers Farm/Ganga Rai of Engadine made its way from the Manistique Farmer & Artisan Market to Upper Crust Deli - Manistique. The distribution included microgreens, three varieties of kale, beets, onions, dill, garlic, kohlrabi, zucchini, green beans, tomatoes, purple cabbage, acorn squash, and pumpkins - a great late-summer harvest headed into a local kitchen.

We're also excited to share that Furlong Creek Farm once again reached its guaranteed sales threshold, meaning everything they brought to market was purchased directly by shoppers. That's exactly the kind of outcome Farmers to Markets is designed to encourage - stronger sales and greater stability for participating farms.

Thank you to Brittney, Kylee, Alexis, and the entire Upper Crust Deli team for partnering with us again. One of the most interesting parts of Farmers to Markets is its ability to connect farms not only with food pantries and community organizations, but also with local restaurants. For farmers, that can open doors to new customers and future wholesale relationships; for restaurants, it creates opportunities to work directly with nearby growers and incorporate more locally produced ingredients into their menus.

We're excited to see what Upper Crust creates with this week's harvest and, even more importantly, where relationships like this between local farms and local businesses could lead beyond the program.

Thank you to Demers Farm, Furlong Creek Farm, Upper Crust Deli, MDARD, MIFMA, and everyone supporting local agriculture and a stronger regional food system.

We'll be back next week with our next Farmers to Markets distribution update! 💚

We were pleasantly surprised to have TV6 stop by the market for a feature last week, and we’re so grateful they took the time to highlight a few of the people who have been part of the market since its very beginning.

Kathleen Haynes is an incredibly talented and meticulous baker and specialty flower grower whose care shows in everything she brings to the market. Steve Schmeck and Sue Robishaw, known as Many Tracks, have also been with the market from the start, sharing their wonderfully unique music that has become such a familiar part of our Wednesday evenings.

Thank you again to TV6 for visiting Manistique and helping share the stories of some of the people who have helped shape our market over the years! 💚💚💚

🌱 Farmers to Markets Program – August 26 Distribution 🌱

This week, our Farmers to Markets distribution returned to Good Neighbors Food Pantry in Manistique, with fresh locally grown food from Demers Farm/Ganga Rai of Engadine making its way to individuals and families in our area. This was possibly our largest distribution yet - just over 200 pounds of fresh, locally grown food. The distribution included cherry and beefsteak tomatoes, onions, red and purple potatoes, zucchini, garlic, purple cabbage, green beans, and pie pumpkins. Seeing that much food move directly from a local farm into a community food pantry really shows the impact this program can have.

We met with Mary, Susan, and Jim this morning for the distribution and are grateful to them, along with Margot, Carol, Doug, and the many Good Neighbors volunteers, for the work they continue to do providing food assistance and support throughout our area.

And some great news for Furlong Creek Farm - they reached their guaranteed sales threshold at the market this week, meaning their products were purchased directly by market shoppers. That's exactly the kind of outcome this program is intended to support for participating farmers.

The Farmers to Markets Program, made possible through MDARD and MIFMA, is a new statewide initiative designed to create more consistent sales opportunities for participating farms, increase access to locally grown food, and strengthen farmers markets. The Manistique Farmer & Artisan Market, along with Demers Farm and Furlong Creek Farm, is proud to be part of the inaugural group of five Michigan farmers markets and 11 farm businesses participating in the program.

MDARD recently published its announcement introducing the inaugural Farmers to Markets participants across Michigan. We encourage you to read more about this first-of-its-kind program and the work taking place here in Manistique and across the state:

Read the MDARD announcement:
https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/about/media/pressreleases/2026/08/06/mdard-mifma-announce-inaugural-participants-of-farmers-to-markets-program

Thank you to Demers Farm, Furlong Creek Farm, Good Neighbors Food Pantry, MIFMA, MDARD, and our community partners for continuing to make these connections possible. We'll be back next week with another distribution update as fresh local food reaches its next destination!💚
