Good evening, Market-goers! Tomorrow, May 30 2026 is our first of three Kids Days this summer! Each one is always a little different depending on the weather and who is available to come help us celebrate one of our most energetic attending demographic groups- kiddos! Tomorrow we have Marshall District Library doing storytime at 10:30, IBM Neil Foster Ring 89 Magicians starting at 10am, and if we're lucky we'll get a visit from the Marshall Fire Department - but they have another event to attend not to mention their actual job of fighting any fires that rear their flamey heads in town. Kids Days are also the days when Youth Vendors set up their booths, so come out and see if your young friends are selling their hand-made wares!

If you've been counting the years, you'll note that 2027 is the Market's 25th anniversary. We've started planning a little and want the Market-kiddos to help us with one of our celebration projects. We plan to have posters all over town of Market scenes, and would love to feature some kid art. Tomorrow, kids can find custom coloring pages to color and sign OR can draw their own favorite Market images and memories. Choose your best work, make sure your name is on it, and turn it in for Kids Bucks and to be included in the poster celebration next summer! Open to children 15 and younger.

We still have Calhoun Senior Activity Bingo sheets available, and there will be a new recipe card for your Market "cookbook." Ride your bike to Market and get a $2 token for any Vendor. Bring your Bridge Card and get your SNAP benefits for fresh local produce! It's going to be a nice day. Can't wait to see you!

Good evening, Market-Goers. There's a phrase that's been on my mind for awhile that, to be honest, irks me. "Rain or shine." As in, "Marshall Area Farmers' Market will be open tomorrow, rain or shine." Now, it is true that we are an outdoor market in Michigan and thus are subject to the vagaries of the weather patterns. And yes, rain can be uncomfortable and annoying but we layer up and put on a raincoat and muddle through. We keep (a weather eye, har har) watch on the dangerous bits, such as lightning and heavy winds, but we try to be consistent with our presence and so we will be open regardless of the rain.

How does this tie into my dislike of the phrase, "rain or shine"? While there are plenty of gatherings that could reasonably be cancelled due to rain, I am hard pressed to think of many that cancel thanks to the unexpected presence of the sun. First of all, it's always there during the day, so its appearance is entirely predictable. Clouds might diminish its intensity, but it doesn't go away and it's not a surprise. Secondly, how many rain-celebrating rituals do we have in our modern society? I suppose there's puddle-jumping and meteorological experiments and the good ol' Michigan car wash, but I've never heard of something being cancelled due to lack of rain.

But what else should I say? I can't think of another phrase that sums up the sentiment quite so succinctly. So I will tell you that tomorrow, Railway Farms will have kohlrabi, rain or shine. And FreezeHouse Food Co. will have sangria kits just in time for Memorial Day, rain or shine. There will be a Kids' Activity, Senior Activity Bingo, and a new recipe card , rain or shine. And that, even though precipitation can be annoying, the Farmers' Market will be open- rain or shine.

But not if there's lightning.

It's raining a little bit, but we are OPEN! There's some good stuff here, Market-Goers, so you aren't likely to be disappointed if you come out. Wear your wellies and bring an umbrella and you're all set. The band has braved the weather and they have instruments: if they can do it, you can do it, too!

Good evening, Market-Goers! There have been some questions regarding if the Market is open during rainy times and the answer is Yes! We pack our ponchos and stride amidst the canopies like well-prepared Midwesterners. So don't be afraid of a little bit of damp: come on out and show the Vendors some love!

There will be a Kids' Activity this week, so youth up to age 14 have a chance to earn 5 Kids Bucks. And for our Calhoun County residents over 60- Market Bingo is back! Stop by the Market Booth in row 4 to pick up your Activity Bingo Card. You can also pick one up at Marshall District Library already, and there will be cards available at our partner locations in the upcoming week. For those who don't know, this is funded by a mini-grant from Calhoun County Senior Millage and is a way to expose seniors to activities and services in the county while keeping them socially and physically engaged. Complete one bingo and get 30 Market Bucks to spend at our Vendors. Complete two bingos and get 50 Market Bucks to spend at our Vendors! Who doesn't love free food?? Feedback to this program has been positive, with many people reporting that the Bucks are nice to get but they most enjoy the activities.

In case you missed her last week, Katie will be back this week at Lucy's Gluten-free Delights, serving up tasty baked goods without gluten. Swing by her booth and give her a welcome. Better yet, give it a taste!

In addition to Hazel Family Farm bringing all the color with their flowers, this week they have baby food plants, too! Tomato starts, dill, cilantro, and three kinds of basil! Did you know that marigolds are a "trap plant"? You can plant your tomatoes and basil together with a couple of marigolds nearby and certain pests will be more attracted to the flowers than to your tomatoes! It won't stop the squirrels from eating your nearly-ripe tomato fruit, but it does help with the insects.

(Oh, and by the way- Emery Foods says the strawberries are starting to look ready, so if we are very very lucky, tasty little red berries will be with us tomorrow! Fingers crossed!!)

Come rain or snow, we'll be at 125 W. Green St, Marshall MI on Saturday, May 16 from 8am-12noon. Here are the anticipated Vendors and Guests:
