Good evening, Market-Goers. There's a phrase that's been on my mind for awhile that, to be honest, irks me. "Rain or shine." As in, "Marshall Area Farmers' Market will be open tomorrow, rain or shine." Now, it is true that we are an outdoor market in Michigan and thus are subject to the vagaries of the weather patterns. And yes, rain can be uncomfortable and annoying but we layer up and put on a raincoat and muddle through. We keep (a weather eye, har har) watch on the dangerous bits, such as lightning and heavy winds, but we try to be consistent with our presence and so we will be open regardless of the rain.
How does this tie into my dislike of the phrase, "rain or shine"? While there are plenty of gatherings that could reasonably be cancelled due to rain, I am hard pressed to think of many that cancel thanks to the unexpected presence of the sun. First of all, it's always there during the day, so its appearance is entirely predictable. Clouds might diminish its intensity, but it doesn't go away and it's not a surprise. Secondly, how many rain-celebrating rituals do we have in our modern society? I suppose there's puddle-jumping and meteorological experiments and the good ol' Michigan car wash, but I've never heard of something being cancelled due to lack of rain.
But what else should I say? I can't think of another phrase that sums up the sentiment quite so succinctly. So I will tell you that tomorrow, Railway Farms will have kohlrabi, rain or shine. And FreezeHouse Food Co. will have sangria kits just in time for Memorial Day, rain or shine. There will be a Kids' Activity, Senior Activity Bingo, and a new recipe card , rain or shine. And that, even though precipitation can be annoying, the Farmers' Market will be open- rain or shine.
But not if there's lightning.
