Vitruvian Farms was founded by Shawn Kuhn, Craig Merten and Tommy Stauffer in June of 2010. Vitruvian Farms is an organic farm located in McFarland, less than 7 miles from the center of downtown Madison. As is the symbolism behind our name, our farm aims to follow three principles: Balance, Beauty and Proportionality. We strive to farm using all of these concepts and hope to instill them in others throughout our community. We are rooted on the basic ideas of community and sustainability. This begins with providing a great food source and continues with providing a place for the community to come together and be apart of something special. Farming is only the beginning of the amazing ideas and plans we have in the works for the future

With September comes the beginning of fall, as well as our September Featured Vendor, Lovefood!

Lovefood is an organic, family-run vegetable and herb farm based in Stoughton, WI (9.5 miles away from Vitruvian!). The Bachhuber family–Abby, David, and Soleia– grows roughly 70 different veggies and herbs, which they sell to their community via grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets, and their own seasonal farm store and CSA. Their goal is to grow food with intention, and we think that definitely comes through in the flavors of the herbs we carry from them 🌿

Like a natural ecosystem, the conditions on our farm are constantly changing and require us to adapt in order to survive and thrive. In ecology, the more roles (or “niches”) occupied in an ecosystem, the more resilient an ecosystem is to disturbances. Many of our team members have taken this teaching of nature to heart and don’t just hold one role on the farm – they hold multiple!

Being highly adaptable, these individuals cycle across teams, lending their skills and energy to whatever the farm needs most in the moment. Depending on the day (and the person), they may be working in the fields, pack shed, mushroom barns, Farm Store, or delivery trucks.

Working in these roles allows them to gain more knowledge about the inner workings of our farm, expand their skillsets, and link the sub-teams on our farm, furthering the culture of camaraderie at Vitruvian.

The contributions of these team members are invaluable, and we are so grateful to have them as a part of our team.

If you’ve ever ordered food from the online Farm Store, been excited to receive your CSA box at your doorstep, or snacked on some Vitruvian produce at your favorite local restaurant, then you have benefitted from the hard work of our delivery drivers. Our delivery team plays a key role in keeping our local food system connected.

With routes through the majority of Dane County, our drivers complete 200+ home deliveries (of CSAs and online orders) and 50+ restaurant deliveries every week! These impressive numbers only tell part of the story – our delivery team also prioritizes human connection and creating positive experiences for customers.

Their focus on relationship building contributes to Vitruvian Farm’s larger goal of making nutritious and sustainable food more accessible to our community. We couldn’t be more proud to have our delivery drivers as a part of our team!

The Store at Vitruvian is OPEN but, due to road construction, our HWY 51 driveway will be closed until September. We recommend driving in and out of our long driveway off of Tower Road.

The farm store is open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-6pm at 2727 US Hwy 51 in McFarland.

Road construction can be tough on local businesses so we appreciate everyone who has continued to come out to support us!

We’ve now reached the halfway point of our CSA season! As we reflect on the yummy produce we’ve had these past few months and the yummy produce yet to come, we want to recognize the people from whose labor and care these veggies came from – our field team!

In all weather conditions, the field team can be found on the farm with sweat on their brows and smiles on their faces. They spend their days tending to our veggies by planting, pruning, weeding, washing, and harvesting them. Farming is hard work, but our tenacious field team stays the course, and has the delicious veggies in our CSA boxes and Farm Store to show for their efforts.
