I hate it when she posts embarrassing pictures of me on Facebook. She didn’t come home till midnight last night and she didn’t even feed us when she got home. She got up early and got our breakfast but I punished her for last night by not eating mine.

Angel Trumpets!

Angel Trumpets are toxic. You must not eat them, smoke them, make tea from them. Don’t feed them to your rabbit. Light handling won’t hurt you but you need to be careful. I have Angel Trumpets at my house. They are mysterious. They are gorgeous. They are nightshade. The bloom opens up at night. They smell out of this world, only at night. My dogs do not eat angel trumpets. They eat dogfood and treats. I guess Angel Trumpets are not for everybody but if you would like one I have them for $10. The old man I get them from propagates them. I could make a living propagating Angel Trumpets but I have too much to do. I always watch for the Angel Trumpet sign in his yard when I happen by there. Hadn’t caught him in a long time. An arboretum person happened by and bought some as I was unloading them. She understands them. She said she could use this to get rid of her husband🙂🙂🙂. She was kidding. I think.

Big Springs Mill!

Very exciting to report we once again are carrying Big Springs Mill flour. Right now we only have 2lb bags of seasoned flour because that is all they have produced so far. They are waiting on new bags. As soon as more products come available we will surely have them.

I was fortunate to get to meet the new manager yesterday, a local man, James Elkins, pictured below. James has a background in management at big industrial mills that produce as much flour in a day as Big Springs Mill will be able to produce in a year. So he has a lot of experience. The old miller, Benny, who was the miller at Big Springs Mill for 30 years, is back . He lives in sight of the mill.

I asked James what is it that makes Big Springs Mill flour so much better than flour you can buy at Walmart. He said it is the quality of the wheat and the mill itself. The old mill grinds the wheat differently than the new fangled mass production mills. The seasoned flour is a secret recipe. The former owners had to sign off on it so the present manager could buy the special Big Springs Mill recipe for the seasoned flour.

Big Springs Mill was built in 1850. In the pictures below James is standing in front of the original slate silo built in 1850.

We did business with Big Springs Mill for 40 years. For 35 years the salesman would come around and take orders. The next day the truck would come with the flour. Towards the end, the salesman and the truck stopped coming. I had to go get it. It was a pain to go get it because they were so busy. It wasn’t running smoothly. It was chaos.

I didn’t realize how special it was to have Big Springs Mill bringing us flour until it was no more. What a loss! Ya’ll might not realize how special Poor Farmers Market is until it is no more. We might live forever but we have been losing our old suppliers as they die off and their children choose an easier and more lucrative path.

James started working at Big Springs Mill last October. He and his son spent months cleaning. That place is clean! His wife works in the office. There is a lot to it, to get an old mill back up and running. Good luck to James. It is a labor of love. He is so excited about his new job at Big Springs Mill. I felt a little teary eyed and sentimental as James gave me a tour of the old mill. Most of their equipment is like a hundred years old. I hope he can get it to make enough profit to keep it going. I’m sure the old mill is like Poor Farmer’s Market. It is love that keeps it going. If it was all about money, it wouldn’t be worth the effort and struggle.

Of all the things I could do with my life, I can do anything I want, I can travel, I can retire, I can do anything I want, but nothing makes me happier than doing what I did yesterday. I like to go to special places and bring back special products to sell at Poor Farmers Market, like Big Springs Mill flour.

We saw a deer in our yard as we were coming in the house. She said, “Don’t you want to go chase that deer?”. I said no. I want to come in the house, and have me some supper, and relax on the laundry room floor where it’s cool. She was surprised I didn’t take off after that deer. It has lost some of the thrill for me lately, chasing deer.

This drought is getting real. People are running out of water. Better not waste water right now.

Are you the same little mouse I let go outside last night? The one that was in my dogfood, last night? I don’t want mice in my dogfood. I will give you one more chance, because you are cute, but I can’t live with mice. You guys reproduce like crazy. If I let you stay there will be a thousand mice in my dogfood and my cabinets and…..my bed. Yes one got on my face when I was asleep last winter.

Monday Morning.

Riding home from the Indian Restaurant in Stuart last night with my cousin ,and next door neighbor, Libby, my daughter called, as she always does, on her way to work and on her way back home back home from work. “I will see you at 10 or 11” I tell her as I hang up. Libby thought we were getting together tonight but I was talking about 10 or 11 in the morning to work. I am ten times more when I work with Casey, I tell Libby. With her I am more. Some people bring out the most in us. Some people bring out the worst in us.

I don’t know if my life’s work and accomplishments will leave behind a legacy and something my family can build upon, or if it will be a ball and chain, or a heavy heavy burden, to them. They can auction it all off piece by piece to the highest bidder if it becomes a ball and chain.

There is no way NO WAY I would try to keep our businesses going without our present leadership team. I could not do it, and wouldn’t want to. Casey and Timmy, Jill and Amber, Trinity and Terry Webb.

Trinity can run Poor Farmers Market, and the whole thing without us, but believe me, he doesn’t want to. I guess he would do it if he had to, but he doesn’t want that lifestyle. It is hard. Very hard.

Speaking of Trinity ,June 23 is his 33rd anniversary working at Poor Farmers Market. Of course Trinity and Terry and all our key employees deserve “a living wage” whatever that is. I want to pay them all I possibly can. The government puts a big hurt on them by forcing me ,by law ,to give the huge raises to high school students and beginners. That is the huge impediment to my business, the fricking government.

I need to go up there a make a picture of Trinity for our anniversary of working together. I want to acknowledge him and honor him. I didn’t know when he started working here when he was 15 years old that he would become the key person at Poor Farmers Market and Meadows of Dan.

When I worry about the business Trinity always reminds me. It is God running this show. We both work for Him. Leave it to God.

We feel more like playing late in the evening when the sun is gone. We like for her to throw our toy and we race to see who can get it first. Tonight there was a little mouse in our dogfood. She took the whole can outside and let the mouse out. It ran under the house. Tony tried to catch it but that little tiny mouse out run him , and out smarted him.
