If you haven’t yet, don’t plant your tomatoes til later this week. If you have—get your covers on today! Soil temps are fine now after the last week of warming—but blackberry winter (the third wave after dogwood winter and redbud winter) is upon us! Here, at Village Garden, we have an initial 350 well-hardened tomatoes nestled in already, some over a week in (but we have 2000 more lined up, and can replace the 350 if needed). Our stakes are already in, so normal row covers don’t work but we will use painters plastic (the very thin stuff for furniture, not floors) and “punch” it over the stakes. Brief moratorium on more plants til THURSDAY afternoon. Huge fan going onto the beds Tuesday) and Wednesday night. So long as air is moving and it doesn’t hit 32 it will just slow them down a day or two. “If you want an early tomato you must plant an early tomato”. Happy growing PS—fun fact—those tall redbud “trees” that just flowered? Member of the pea family. Yes, 100 foot tall fabaceae relatives. Told yall there ARE NO TREES.
