During World War II, Britain's clandestine Special Operations Executive, led by Major General Colin Gubbins, developed custom rubber overshoes for operatives landing behind enemy lines in Asia and the Pacific.
Invented by camouflage specialist Hugh Vandeleur, these soles were molded to replicate human bare feet. When operative Spencer Chapman and covert teams came ashore from submarines, their bootprints mimicked local barefoot coastal residents, successfully deceiving Japanese coastal patrols.
