Menlo Park Farmers Market

A non-profit community-based market sponsored by the local LIONS Club. Our Primary Mission is to contribute to The Quality of Life in our community. till 1 p.m.

Open year-round every Sunday 9 a.m. We are a non-profit community-based market sponsored by the local LIONS Club. Our vendors pay a small stall fee and we pay our Market Manager for a few hours per week. The rest all goes to charities (mainly local) – but the primary purpose of the Market is not to make money – it is to contribute to the Quality of Life in our community. Our Farmers represent an eclectic collection – both Certified Organic and Other – but all are passionate about their calling and take great pride in their produce. Most of our vendors have been with us since our founding 30 years ago (1991) or joined us soon thereafter. Some of the stalls are today are even staffed by second generation offspring of people who were at our founding. We operate year round, taking time-off only one or two weekends per year around Christmas and New Year. Our selection of produce is of course not as wide in the winter months, but there is nevertheless a surprising variety even in the shortest days of the year.

Good news and not so good news this week

The good news is that we started enjoying fresh Corn earlier this year as the climate at the time encouraged early ripening of the crop. But the bad news tells us that this also means the harvest will end earlier than usual this year. G&S still plan to have some fresh corn available this weekend (Aug 2nd) and maybe even next weekend (Aug 9th) but that'll probably be it foe this year. So Corn lovers – be aware and be prepared!

The same vagaries in our weather are causing our local Avocado crop to be unpredictable – but we hope to see them later in August. Fresh locally grown (!) Avocados are a real treat!

And just for this Sunday, our favorite Fish vendor from Half Moon Bay (Hi Pietro and Joan!) cannot be at the market but will be back next week (There’s a wedding going on in the mid-west somewhere that they need to attend.)

SUMMER IS HERE - CAN MELONS BE FAR BEHIND?

The days leading up to July 4th bring thoughts of BBQ and Corn and....

MELONS! The good news is that Zuckerman's Farm will be bringing their crop to the market this Sunday - Just in time... YEA!

OUR 34TH ANNIVERSARY!

A small group of ladies started organizing a Farmers Market for downtown Menlo Park around 35 years ago. Eventually they got all the permits and logistics sorted out and today (Jun 14) we celebrated our official 34th Anniversary of actual operation

Today was otherwise a fairly typical market for this time of year – we collected $1,050 in vendor fees for deposit in the bank.

Donations by vendors of excess produce for the needy resulted in approximately 925 pounds of produce.

Varieties of donated produce included apricots, apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, plums strawberries, basil, beans, bitter melon, bok choy, beets, cabbage, chard, eggplant, lettuce, living greens, parsley, peppers, spinach, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini and assorted baked goods.

There was so much this week (height of the summer season) that we needed 4 volunteer vehicles to transport it all to the various receiving destinations that will actually distribute the food to the needy. These included St. Vincent de Paul in Half Moon Bay, a more local St. Anthony’s dining room, and some SOS safe houses.

SUMMER CORN IS HERE!

Normally corn doesn’t arrive at market until towards the end of June – but here a month early… FRESH CORN ON THE COB!

The frozen stuff one gets at the Supermarket is sort of OK if it is the only alternative available – but it is NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING if you can get it fresh off the stalk within hours of being picked.

The news is that it will be here this Sunday (May 31st) from our usual supplier G&S Farms out of Brentwood. So come and get it – and get the BBQ ready…

YES! FULL HOUSE!

Memorial Day weekend and the Menlo Park Farmers Market has full house! That is to say that from mid-winter to early spring, we are missing some vendors as their produce (Veggies or fruit or whatever) is not yet ready but is still developing in the fields or in the orchard.

But comes a time of year (around about this weekend) when everybody has their produce ripe for market.

This weekend the final spot in the market was occupied by K and J Orchards as they return after a brief absence with a fully laden booth - with all sorts of fresh and wonderful fruit. (They have been doing this since we started the market over 30 years ago – so they are no strangers to the process.)

So they join all our other vendors this weekend for what is one of the peak markets of the year. Come one – Come all – and check out the bounty!

SUMMER IS HERE – AS ARE THE DRUPES!

Yes – we are into May – and the drupes have officially arrived
So what’s a “drupe” I hear you ask. Well, it’s the technical name for what we might loosely call a “stone fruit” – cherry, apricot, peach, plum, and so on.

The cherries are now in ample supply, there are reports of some white peaches being available this week, and soon the apricots, and various varieties of peaches and plums will be upon us.

We are expecting multiple new arrivals this week - from Gerald Tapley (at the Cairns Ranch stand) Danny (at the Perez Brothers stand) as well as the Kashiwase stand. Exact details about the types and varieties of newly arrived drupes can best be obtained by checking these stands in person – and BE SURE to keep an eye out for maybe some other surprises elsewhere in the market

Ah! Summer is here – and the stone fruit train is steaming into the station. Enjoy!

A Change in Seasons?

This year it has been a weird spring in terms of weather. So we have been waiting with some trepidation for the start of the “Stone Fruit” series (Heralded by Cherries, then the Apricots, followed by Peaches and the Plums).

How did that weather affect the pollination, the setting of the blossoms, the ripening of the fruit…

Typically we look to mid May for first arrival of cherries, but Ta-Daa!! Last Sunday (April 12th) we got our first glimpse. At the Perez Brothers stand, there were some (not a lot) of cherries to be had. Just a few… and all gone fairly quickly (…sob – see last picture)

But that gives us high hopes for coming Sunday (April 19) and we will see wider availability of Cherries. And that in turn means Apricots are out there getting ready for their entrance in a few weeks.

Likely candidate stalls for the cherries are of course Perez Brothers and Tapley Farms – both renowned for their citrus offerings during the winter and (we expect) now transitioning with new offering (Cherries! At last…) as spring starts to morph into summer and the rest of the “stone fruit” train coming down the pike.

These two are the most likely prospects for cherries this week – but keep your eyes open – there may be other vendors to surprise us!

RECORD WARM WEATHER FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR - which has made the Blueberries come in a couple of weeks early this spring.

We are informed that our friends at "Triple Delight" will be at the market this Sunday with the first fruits - an unexpected treat for this early in the season!

AVOCADOS ARE BACK!

Yes! The recent hot weather has resulted in the arrival of the first avocados from our local grower! Wow!. Just a relatively small quantity of Bacon Avocados at this point, the Haas will be coming later.

(And yes - these avocados are both organic and locally grown in the Bay Area - double whammy!)
