This "Indigo Rose" black tomato is high in beneficial anthocyanins, an anti-oxidant which is thought to potentially help fight cancer as well as diabetes and obesity. It's an open pollinated tomato developed at Oregon State University using conventional plant breeding and is NOT GMO. We don't need no stinkin' GMOs to increase the nutritional value of our food.

One of the prettiest new farmers markets debuted Monday night at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts Plaza for the Arts at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. 4-8pm. On hand was Ellen Kanner with her book; healthy chef demo; live music; plus local produce from Urban Oasis Project, LNB Groves and others; baked goods from Zak the Baker; prepared food and more from The Market Company. Soon to open is the Cafe at Books & Books. What a great way to spend a Monday evening!

Our Flora Friday plant of the week is --Blackbead (Pithecellobium keyense)

Blackbead is a native tropical hardwood shrub / small tree that is found in coastal hammocks or pine rocklands in the Florida Keys. The leaves are compound; and usually have four leaflets that come in pairs (they look like rabbit ears). The flowers are fuzzy looking (kind of like a dandelion seed), fragrant, and generally pink or off-white colored. The green coiled seed pods split open when ripe, exposing shiny black seeds attached to a red aril (a fleshy part that surrounds the seed). (See photo.)

Great for Wildlife--Blackbead provides food and shelter to a variety of wildlife. The sweet-flavored arils are eaten by birds, which inadvertently transport the seeds to new locations. It is a nectar plant for many species of bees and butterflies. Blackbead is also a larval host plant for Cassius Blue (Leptotes cassius) and Large Orange Sulphur (Phoebis agarithe) butterflies.

If you are looking for a nice small to medium sized plant for your yard that is both beautiful and provides great wildlife habitat, you can’t go wrong with the blackbead.

These are the lovely winter radishes I just picked up at our CSA.

They're destined for the fermentation pot. What would you do with them?
