At an elite party, my husband abandoned me, took his mistress onstage, and publicly declared his new secretary his lawful wife! Watching the livestream, my billionaire dad called: "Divorce him! Tonight, I'll bankrupt his family!"
Julian’s baritone voice ricocheted through the acoustic speakers, dominating the cavernous, chandelier-lit ballroom. “My marriage to Eleanor Sterling was merely a strategic arrangement. For the past three years, she has occupied the title of Mrs. Vance. But tonight, I refuse to live a lie. Tonight, I want to give the person who truly fought alongside me to build Vance Holdings the recognition she so desperately deserves.”
He tightened his possessive grip on his secretary, Khloe, who gazed up at him with rehearsed, tear-filled doe eyes. The crowd gasped. Smartphones went up in unison, eager to live-stream the billionaire’s wife being discarded so they could feed the footage straight to the tabloids.
I didn’t cower. I didn’t shed a single tear. For three exhausting years, I had molded myself into a human shield for the Vance family. I had secretly leveraged my family’s immense wealth to plug the gaping holes in Julian’s catastrophic misjudgments. They genuinely believed Julian was a self-made prodigy. They mistook my graceful silence for the weakness of a helpless dependent.
Slipping into the soundproofed corridor, my phone buzzed. It was Tyler Hayes, the ruthless head of the Sterling Investment Department.
“El, I’m watching the live stream! I’ve already ordered the department to freeze three massive lines of credit for Vance Holdings. I am acting like a cold-blooded assassin right now. Do not try to talk me off this ledge.”
“I’m not stopping you, Tyler,” I replied, staring at my immaculate reflection in the gold-rimmed mirror. Only my eyes betrayed the shift; they were pure ice. “Just don’t do it too fast. Don’t sever everything at once.”
“Not too fast?!” Tyler squawked in disbelief. “Eleanor, they just threw you to the wolves in front of the entire city!”
“Precisely because it’s on a live stream,” I murmured, a faint, dangerous smile ghosting across my lips. “The stage is set so perfectly. It would be an absolute tragedy to end the theatrical performance too quickly.”
Tyler went completely silent for two long seconds. “I know that tone,” he finally said, his voice dropping an octave. “Someone is about to have a profoundly terrible time.”
“Does Khloe Bennett want to be the esteemed Mrs. Vance?” I asked, a dark amusement coloring my words. “Then let her take a seat on the throne first.”
Tyler let out a sharp, wicked laugh. “Crystal clear, boss. We leave the throne intact…”
“…but we slip a few rusty nails under the velvet cushion,” I finished, my voice a lethal whisper. “The more comfortably she tries to sit, the deeper they’ll pierce.”
