Little baby prairie. We can tell these babies are growing in the rows we planted with our SWCD’s seed drill. Pretty sure that’s our new native prairie pasture coming in with seed from ! This year is all about establishment. Knocking down weeds a few times and keeping the sheep elsewhere so solid roots can settle into their new permanent homes.

Back home after a week in Chicago for work and wow the farm is looking like spring! Asparagus is ready, first mushrooms popped, and the apple trees are starting to blossom. The sheep and goats are anxious to get into grazing. Soon girls. Soon.

Introducing Artemis and Perseverance! Every year we use a theme to name our keeper lambs and kids. Being a very very nerdy family, this year we are using NASA Spacecrafts/Missions. You met Cassini yesterday, named for the early 2000s mission to Saturn. Today you’re meeting Artemis and Perseverance. Artemis - the series of launches taking us back to the moon. Perseverance - one of the Mars rovers. We’re excited to continuously improve our herd (and celebrate humanities exploration too).

Sorry for the silence! We’re back and I have to shine the light on our handsome ram. We call him Sheriff, but he’s officially RePete. He made a long journey from in PA last spring. Because we fall shear, I have to be patient before we can make his soft wool into something lovely. In the meantime though, we’ve decided to keep one of his daughters born this February and named her Cassini. Cassini and I will work on some better pictures.

We’re slowly working our way through lambing and kidding. I’m grateful the temps have warmed up and this lamb sure seems happy for the morning sunshine. I’m very excited for the lambs we’re getting but the ewes I want to keep lambs from keep throwing ram lambs and I want ewe lambs. So long as we have healthy lambs and kids, I’m not complaining! Healthy family of farmers would be great progress too.
