Our food trucks have a new home starting tomorrow. Find them around the corner on S. 1st St. They're a little tucked away while the market fills in for the season, but absolutely worth the walk. Go show them some love tomorrow!

This season, you may notice something a little different at the market — some of our vendors will be selling fruit they didn't grow themselves. We want to be upfront about that, and explain why we made this call.

This March, record-breaking temperatures pushed local fruit trees into bloom weeks ahead of schedule. Then April brought a hard freeze. Every orchard we've spoken with in the Uncompahgre Valley reported a total loss — not just cherries, but all fruit tree crops. It was a devastating blow to farmers who were already navigating drought and rising costs.

Orchards in Palisade, within our normal sourcing region, fared better. We've made a temporary exception this season to allow vendors directly impacted by the freeze to resell locally sourced, Western Slope fruit. This is not a permanent policy change.

These are the orchards that have been supplying our region for years. A full season without income — on top of everything else — can end a farm for good. Allowing resell this season is how we make sure they're still here next year, and the year after that.

All resell fruit is local, Western Slope sourced, and clearly communicated at the vendor's booth. If you have questions, come find me at the market or send us a message. We're always happy to talk.

Fruit trees break dormancy once temperatures hit a certain threshold. From there, how fast they bloom depends on how fast heat accumulates. The warmer it is, the faster they progress.

This March, unseasonably high temperatures hitting up to 86° pushed fruit local fruit trees through that process weeks ahead of schedule and in a fraction of the normal time.

Fully open blossoms are extremely vulnerable to freezing temperatures. After the heat wave broke in April, we experienced a freeze that devastated local orchards. Most lost 100% of their crops (not just cherries).

Palisade Peach Shack was able to protect their trees and has direct-to-consumer cherries this week. Wag’s World lost their crop but is also bringing local cherries as resell- something we’re allowing this season for impacted orchards. More on that decision soon. Both here this Saturday.
