We are Morgantown, West Virginia's only full-time health food market, providing local, organic, and natural foods to the surrounding area. We seek out the best local farmers to provide us with farm fresh eggs, produce, meats, honey, jams, nut and seed butters, real maple syrup, and even one-of-a-kind artisan creations. We are a great find for those looking for the purest food products, great alter

natives for particular food allergies, or foods that work with special diets. We have an enormous variety of spices, bulk grains, dried fruits, teas, extracts, tofu, vegan foods, dairy, and non-dairy products. Every member is a co-owner of our company. We have a democratic system where members run for office and are elected by the members to serve on the Board of Directors, which helps shape the future of the co-op. Everyone is welcome to shop at our store and participate as much as they want. Holding a membership is like owning a part of the community.

Address to Mountain People’s Co-op members and customers

Given the financial difficulties of the co-op, the Board of Directors and the staff had estimated that the store could remain open through December, 2021, and still meet payroll. With the most recent sales information, we see that we must alter this plan. It has been decided by the board that the business will close its doors on Friday, December 24, 2021 at 4 pm. At that time, the staff will be laid off and the board will work to determine next steps.

With this revised plan, the last opportunity to place a special order will be by Wednesday, December 15, 2021, no later than 10 am. All special orders must be with a prepaid deposit, which will be refunded only if the item does not arrive.

There has been talk of donations, which is touching. Please understand, though, that donations or fundraisers cannot revive this business. Some members of the local community express interest in beginning anew with some other vision. If you favor such a possibility, energy and ideas would be needed then.

People have been asking about Venerable Bean Bakery. VB is a separate entity which has operated on the premises of MPC for many years. The owner of VB intends for his business to continue at some new location in town. You can learn more about this wonderful and unique business and how you can support it at [email protected].

Thank you all for your support over the years, and for the appreciation and understanding that so many have expressed recently, as we give Mountain People’s Co-op the most honorable ending we can manage.

We are heartbroken. Please be kind.

Message to Members of Mountain People’s Co-op:

The financial position of the co-op has worsened. Multiple strategies have been aimed at improvement, but without success. At this month’s board meeting (Monday, December 6, 2021) it was decided that the store must close. The Board of Directors and the store staff are in agreement on this. The plan is to remain open for business at least through December, 2021, while we formulate the specific steps needed to close. The store will accept special orders with a prepaid deposit at least through December 21, 2021. This deposit will be refundable only if the ordered item does not arrive.

We ask for your understanding as we undertake this painful process. In particular, we all owe deep gratitude to the store staff. During this long pandemic time, through multiple innovations, and especially through these last several months of increased financial pressure, the staff have given much in efforts to keep the business running. Please approach them with the respect and appreciation they deserve.

We will keep the membership informed when we have further understanding of how this ending will go.
