Why most canned goods at Apple Tree carry the Eden brand.

Canned goods are convenient. Canned goods store well. But most canned goods have the potential to leak unwanted chemicals into the food they store.

Eden Foods took a different approach. Eden Pioneered Bisphenol-A (BPA) Avoidance in April 1999.

In 1997, Eden Foods became aware of German reports concerning BPA’s toxicity and its prevalence in our lives; in cash register receipts, food packaging, and thousands of household items. Eden Foods immediately took steps to completely avoid BPA.

Since April, 1999, Eden Foods has used toxin-free liners in all its cans. That is why Apple Tree Natural Foods Market focuses on Eden Foods products to source most canned goods.

Ever tried Mu Tea?

Mu Tea was created by George Ohsawa, the founder of the Macrobiotic Movement. Macrobiotics is based on traditional Oriental medicine, with linkages to Zen Buddhism.

The purpose of the blend of herbs and spices in Mu Tea is to tone and strengthen the body. One tea bag makes a large pot. You will experience the vegetable kingdom's power. The tea has a strong, amazing taste. It is not appropriate for the very young.

Based on traditional Oriental remedies, tea ingredients are: Mandarin Orange Peel, Hoelen, Japanese Parsley Root, Peony Root, Atractylis Root, Cinnamon, Angelica Root, Licorice, Ginger Root, Cyperus Root, Apricot Kernel, Rehmannia Root, Panax Ginseng Root, Clove, Coptis Root, Moutan RootMandarin Orange Peel, Hoelen, Japanese Parsley Root, Peony Root, Atractylis Root, Cinnamon, Angelica Root, Licorice, Ginger Root, Cyperus Root, Apricot Kernel, Rehmannia Root, Panax Ginseng Root, Clove, Coptis Root, Moutan RootMandarin Orange Peel, Hoelen, Japanese Parsley Root, Peony Root, Atractylis Root, Cinnamon, Angelica Root, Licorice, Ginger Root, Cyperus Root, Apricot Kernel, Rehmannia Root, Panax Ginseng Root, Clove, Coptis Root, Moutan Root.

Mr. Ohsawa spent a good part of his life studying classic texts of Oriental medicine and disease theory including traditional herbal medicine of China. Each of Mu 16's sixteen herbs are found in medicinal teas since ancient times.

EDEN Mu 16 herb tea is a potent herbal tea with an appealing taste that is to be used cautiously. Each of the herbs contributes its own energy and benefit, but it is in their combined efficacy that each is magnified. George Ohsawa truly created a tea to both enjoy and promote strength and vitality.

EDEN Mu 16 herb tea is made by roasting apricot kernels and rehmannia root for 18 minutes at 175°C. They require longer roasting than the other herbs. The other herbs are cleaned and chopped. Black sand is heated in a roaster. The remaining ingredients are roasted in sand for about 30 seconds. Sand is removed. Sand roasting is most even and stabilizes the components of the herbs.

EDEN Mu 16 herb tea is packaged in unbleached natural fiber tea bags, six in each protective resealable package. A tea bag makes a large pot of tea and can be used twice making a second weaker tea. Make Mu 16 in a glass or stainless steel to protect the nature of the herbs. Place a tea bag in one quart of water. Boil it for a minimum of 10 minutes.

EDEN Mu 16 herb tea is used to increase strength and vitality in general. It is especially appealing during cold months. Mix it with good quality apple juice for a unique, pleasant experience.

Here is some news about cannabis and covid that is pretty interesting.

– Compounds found in h**p "show the ability to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells," Oregon State University says.

New OSU research on h**p and COVID-19 was published Tuesday in the Journal of Natural Products.

Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global H**p Innovation Center in the College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute, led the study.
According to OSU:

H**p, known scientifically as Cannabis sativa, is a source of fiber, food and animal feed, and multiple h**p extracts and compounds are added to cosmetics, body lotions, dietary supplements and food, van Breemen said.

Van Breemen and collaborators, including scientists at Oregon Health & Science University, found that a pair of cannabinoid acids bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.

The compounds are cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, CBDA, and the spike protein is the same drug target used in COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapy. A drug target is any molecule critical to the process a disease follows, meaning its disruption can thwart infection or disease progression.

“These cannabinoid acids are abundant in h**p and in many h**p extracts,” van Breemen said. “They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in ma*****na, and have a good safety profile in humans. And our research showed the h**p compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including variant B.1.1.7, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, first detected in South Africa.”
OSU said those two variants are also known as alpha and beta.
According to OSU:

Characterized by crown-like protrusions on its outer surface, SARS-CoV-2 features RNA strands that encode its four main structural proteins – spike, envelope, membrane and nucleocapsid – as well as 16 nonstructural proteins and several “accessory” proteins, van Breemen said.

“Any part of the infection and replication cycle is a potential target for antiviral intervention, and the connection of the spike protein’s receptor binding domain to the human cell surface receptor ACE2 is a critical step in that cycle,” he said. “That means cell entry inhibitors, like the acids from h**p, could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells. They bind to the spike proteins so those proteins can’t bind to the ACE2 enzyme, which is abundant on the outer membrane of endothelial cells in the lungs and other organs.”

Van Breem said "using compounds that block virus-receptor interaction has been helpful for patients with other viral infections" including HIV-1 and hepatitis.
According to OSU:

Van Breemen, Ruth Muchiro of the College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute and five scientists from OHSU identified the two cannabinoid acids via a mass spectrometry-based screening technique invented in van Breemen’s laboratory. Van Breemen’s team screened a range of botanicals used as dietary supplements including red clover, wild yam, hops and three species of licorice.

An earlier paper in the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry described tailoring the novel method, affinity selection mass spectrometry, to finding drugs that would target the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

In the later research, lab tests showed that cannabigerolic acid and cannabidiolic acid prevented infection of human epithelial cells by the coronavirus spike protein and prevented entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells.

“These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans,” van Breemen said. “They have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2. CBDA and CBGA are produced by the h**p plant as precursors to CBD and CBG, which are familiar to many consumers. However, they are different from the acids and are not contained in h**p products.”
According to OSU:

Van Breemen explains that affinity selection mass spectrometery, which he abbreviates to AS-MS, involves incubating a drug target like the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein with a mixture of possible ligands – things that might bind to it – such as a botanical extract, in this case h**p extract.

The ligand-receptor complexes are then filtered from the non-binding molecules using one of several methods.

“We identified several cannabinoid ligands and ranked them by affinity to the spike protein,” van Breemen said. “The two cannabinoids with the highest affinities for the spike protein were CBDA and CGBA, and they were confirmed to block infection.
“One of the primary concerns in the pandemic is the spread of variants, of which there are many, and B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 are among the most widespread and concerning,” he added. “These variants are well known for evading antibodies against early lineage SARS-CoV-2, which is obviously concerning given that current vaccination strategies rely on the early lineage spike protein as an antigen. Our data show CBDA and CBGA are effective against the two variants we looked at, and we hope that trend will extend to other existing and future variants.”
Van Breemen noted that "resistant variants could still arise amid widespread use of cannabinoids but that the combination of vaccination and CBDA/CBGA treatment should make for a much more challenging environment for SARS-CoV-2."
“Our earlier research reported on the discovery of another compound, one from licorice, that binds to the spike protein too,” he said. “However, we did not test that compound, licochalcone A, for activity against the live virus yet. We need new funding for that.”

OSU said Timothy Bates, Jules Weinstein, Hans Leier, Scotland Farley and Fikadu Tafesse of OHSU also contributed to the cannabinoid study.

This is from a very old post on improving our healthcare system:

On healthcare, the adage about a pound of prevention rules. With proper education and information, billions could be saved on healthcare.

I propose a comprehensive approach to public education and information about diet and nutrition, beginning in kindergarten and extending throughout our public education system. I further propose working through public information officers to coordinate with each State's public health departments to spread information about prevention through diet and exercise.

If possible, I would like to see the establishment of micro-business loans to build family grocery-store style franchises for natural food stores. These would serve several purposes.

The first would be to give families a business they could operate as a family. The next would be using the stores as both food and nutrition resources, with the final option to use each franchise as a vehicle to spread appropriate information about the role of diet and exercise in disease prevention.

I would assemble a board of experts, using such individuals as Dr. James Gordon, MD, who was the Clinton White House consultant on alternative and complimentary medicine. Conventional medicine has many needed applications. But with adequate care and attention paid to proper diet and nutrition, and I believe this will take a federal impetus to be successful, we could better aid the health of our citizens.

Savings could be accomplished at the individual, state and federal level due to a healthier populace.

Of Allergies, Baby Food and Bugs

When I'm outside, if I haven't drunk some nettle leaf tea or taken a couple of nettle leaf capsules my eyes itch like mad. With nettle, the itching is reduced to a tolerable level and soon I forget about my allergic reaction. Nettle might help you if you have seasonal allergies.

Recently the FDA came after Beechnut Baby Foods for selling baby food that had tested positive for either cadmium or mercury or both. A solution for this issue is to make your own baby food and pureed foods.

We now stock the Green Sprouts food mill that safely purees soft foods for babies and others who need or want pureed foods.

Finally, we have the EWG-approved (Environmental Working Group) Badger products for bugs and sun safety. From babies to active adults, the Badger line offers safe and effective bug and sun protection.

P.S. Don't forget your fur friends. We have North Hollow's Grassfed Beef Liver and Heart air-dried snacks for cats and dogs. These treats are single ingredient and our dogs and cat love them.

New Study Found 80% of COVID-19 Patients Were Vitamin D Deficient
A growing amount of research is finding a link between vitamin D and COVID-19, leading some experts to believe the “sunshine vitamin” may be helpful in the fight against the virus. Brothers91/Getty Images
A new study that looked at 216 people with COVID-19 found that 80 percent didn’t have adequate levels of vitamin D in their blood.
The study also found that people who had both COVID-19 and lower vitamin D levels also had a higher number of inflammatory markers such as ferritin and D-dimer, which have been linked to poor COVID-19 outcomes.
A different study found that COVID-19 patients who had adequate vitamin D levels had a 51.5 percent lower risk of dying from the disease and a significant reduced risk for complications.
Medical experts theorize that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may help lower risk or aid recovery from severe COVID-19 for some people, though more testing is needed.
All data and statistics are based on publicly available data at the time of publication.
