Vandal Brand Meats

We offer a wide variety of high-quality meat products produced by our students, faculty and staff.

The purpose of the University of Idaho Meat Science Laboratory is to provide a facility to conduct teaching, research and public service activities for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Department of Animal, Veterinary and Food Sciences. It is devoted to the development of science, the application of that science and to the solution of the problems in animal and meat science. Vandal Br

and Meats was opened to provide a sales outlet to sell the meat products generated by these activities. These sales help compensate for the cost of the livestock, supplies, student labor and maintenance of the facilities. Although the Vandal Brand Meats name has been in use since 1988, the facility has been on campus for more than 40 years.

Recently, Phil Bass, associate professor of meat science, hosted a Beef 101 Short Course at the Meat Science and Innovation Center Honoring Ron Richard. Attendees included importers, distributors and restaurants in Central America, South America and the Caribbean that purchase U.S. beef.

This summer Vandal Brand Meats welcomed Keegan Claiborn on the team as an intern.

Keegan, a Filer native, graduated high school this spring prior to joining the crew. Despite his young age, this summer wasn't his first exposure to the meat science industry. Keegan spent multiple years competing in the Idaho FFA Meats Evaluation and Technology Career Development Event right here on campus.

Keegan finished his internship earlier this month and is headed to college. His favorite cut of meat is a flat iron steak.

Vandal Brand Meats took on Milwaukee! ✈️

Recently, two members of the Vandal Brand Meats team, Catie McCarthy and Talia Holtmeyer, traveled to the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP) Convention. They were able meet new people, make industry connections and see new products.

This was the 87th AAMP convention.

Whether you're a Vandal fan, student, parent or faculty/staff member, there's one thing that we can probably all agree on: the Vandal Dog is iconic. 🌭 Haven't experienced it for yourself? Let's talk about it.

The Vandal Dog is Vandal Brand Meats' version of the hot dog and it's made right here on campus. You can purchase it for yourself — or sometimes find them at campus events — but the most iconic place you'll find them is at athletic events. From basketball to football, you'll be sure to see them in concessions and most likely throughout tailgates. Oftentimes you'll see the Vandal Smoked Sausage offered in concessions alongside the Vandal Dog.

Vandal Brand Meats offers more than these two products, however. It is a full-service, on-campus, butcher shop focused on preparing students for careers in the meat industry. You can work at Vandal Brand Meats as an undergraduate or graduate student. also has classes that use the space for labs. James Nasados is the manager, and Talia Holtmeyer and Ryan Nelson serve as assistant managers. Committed to the community, you'll also see Vandal Brand Meats offering tours, hosting youth competitions and providing meat for events.

Although Vandal Brand Meats and the Vandal Dog have been longstanding traditions, one big thing has changed over the last year: they relocated to the newly built Meat Science and Innovation Center Honoring Ron Richard. Be sure to check out the new building and purchase some Vandal Dogs during their retail hours on Thursday and Friday from noon to 5:00 p.m.
