As we continue to celebrate National Native Plant Month, today’s Nature Fact is about goldenrod, which Doug Tallamy describes it as "one of the best herbaceous native perennials for attracting and feeding wildlife." There are over 100 species of this native plant, two dozen of which are in our state! It provides food and shelter for 115 butterfly and moth species in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic alone. Monarchs depend on goldenrod plants for nectar to fuel their long migrations.

Want to plant goldenrod but are worried about allergies? Don’t worry! Ragweed is to blame for allergies - not goldenrod. Goldenrod gets blamed for allergies simply because it looks similar to ragweed and blooms at the same time.
