Planting into Vetch… and It’s Working

This cover crop was flown on by drone, and you can see where it really took off especially down the hill where that vetch is thick.

A lot of guys told me to be careful planting into vetch with row cleaners and markers.

But honestly?

It’s planting way better than expected.

If this keeps up, we’re hoping for even better results when we hit our corn ground where the vetch is even heavier.

Sometimes you just have to try it and see.

Tonight we passed the reigns onto the next generation....well, kind of. Acre steered the John Deere 4430 while we planted some sweetcorn with this evening. The rows may not be straight, but the memories are unforgettable!

Corn Stalks Took Out Our Drive Chain

Ran into another issue before we even got rolling…

Corn stalks in these no-till conditions kept jumping up and knocking off our drive chains and this time, one’s completely gone.

We also sheared some cotter pins, so for now it’s hose clamps just to keep things together.

Plan is:

Throw a spare chain back on.
Swap to a different bean maturity.
Get everything tightened up and try again.

That’s real farming fix it and keep moving.

Planting Corn into Cover Crops… Does It Actually Work?

Corn planting 2026 is officially underway at Family Tradition Farms.

We’re planting green into heavy cover crops, crimson clover, hairy vetch, and cereal rye all flown on before harvest and left to grow.

Before hitting the field, we loaded up the liquid system with:

10-34-0
28-0-0-5
Prologue (zinc)
Black Max (humic acid)
Running about 1 quart per acre of each to help with nutrient availability and soil health.

Out in the field:

Planting around 2.5” deep.
~35,000 population.
99%+ singulation with precision finger meters.
Monitor catching issues in real time.

We dealt with:

Drive chain issues from heavy cover.
Tensioner problems.
On-the-go fixes just to keep moving.

But at the end of the day… we got it done.

That’s real farming:
Adjust, fix, learn, and keep going.

If you’re planting green or running cover crops, drop your setup below always looking to improve.

Got It Running… Let’s Get to the Field

Got the issue cleaned up and she’s running again.

Fuel system was clogged up pretty good, but after getting everything cleaned out and fired back up, we’re back in business.

Now it’s:

Greasing gauge wheels and row cleaners
Installing the Yetter wheel
Setting the marker for the inside pass

Time to head to the field and get back after it.

I Trusted the Monitor… It Was Right

We started seeing big skips on the monitor… and I had a feeling we were running out of seed.

So we stopped and checked every row.

Row 1: empty
Row 3: empty
The rest: basically out

And the crazy part… the monitor called it exactly.

Even picked up that one row with a meter issue showing lower population the whole time.

That right there is why we’re running the OutFarming monitor it caught it before we made a bigger mistake.

Saved us a whole pass.
