Summer is almost over, but the garden party doesn't have to end. Bring the sunshine indoors with a beautiful little dwarf citrus! I have several varieties including Kaffir Lime, also known as Makrut Lime or Thai Lime.

The Kaffir Lime is a tropical fruit tree native to Southeast Asia. It grows well in large garden pots outdoors in suitable climates or indoors in cooler ones. The leaves are the most frequently used part of the plant, fresh, dried, or frozen, and the rind and crushed leaves emit an intense citrus fragrance. The leaves are used in Indonesian, Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Thai cuisine, and are featured in delicious comfort food dishes such as Tom Kha G*i (Thai Coconut Chicken Soup), spicy recipes like Mushroom Rendang, or Thai Drunken Noodles. The flowers are also highly fragrant and can be made into a sweet-smelling tea.

Price: $23 to $48 depending on size.

Also available:

Dwarf Key Lime
Dwarf Calamondin Orange (Filipino Lime)
Mandarin Orange
Bitter Orange

It's almost spring, and here's what that means around here:

Dwarf citrus seedlings are ready to ship!

These little beauties stand between 7 and 9 inches tall, boast gorgeous glossy green leaves that emit a subtle perfume when crushed, are easy to grow in pots indoors (or outdoors on your patio in warm weather) and will brighten a sunny corner of your home all year long.

Choose from:

Dwarf Thai Lime
Dwarf Key Lime
Dwarf Calamondin Orange
Dwarf Mandarin Orange

All are ready to ship from Murray, Kentucky.

Spring 2025 shipping happens between March and late April (or as long as the weather remains in the 60s and below. These guys like it cool when it comes to spending a couple of days in a box on their way to you).

East Nash Greens is a small local business with a tiny amount of stock. All plants are hand-tended with lots of love and care. But because there are only a few trees on hand at any given time, it's best to place your order now. When they're gone, they're gone (or at least until the next batch reaches maturity -- which can take months to years).

Pick up in person in Murray or order here: https://eastnashgreens.com/products/dwarf-citrus-trees

Looking for holiday gifts for the plant lovers in your life? I have one thing to say: Dwarf Citrus Trees!

These beautiful little trees -- Dwarf Key Lime, Dwarf Thai Lime, Dwarf Persian Sweet Lime, Dwarf Bitter Orange and Dwarf Mandarin -- stand up to 1 1/12 feet in height and grow well in pots. Most appreciate being brought indoors during the winter, but will thrive on your patio or front porch during the warmer months. Some will bear fruit in a couple of years, and the glossy green leaves emit an intense delicious perfume when cut or bruised.

Prices range from $20 - $38. Come check them out in Murray.

Cat not for sale but included for scale. And also because she insisted on modeling. 😁

You may (or may not) know about my little side hustle, East Nash Greens. This is where I indulge my passion for green growing things and sharing them with other plant enthusiasts.

For almost a decade, I grew and sold tomato, pepper, basil and okra seedlings for the gardens of my East Nashville neighbors. And then I tried a little experiment.

I tossed a few Meyer lemon seeds into a pot, stuck them in shady corner of the yard, and forgot about them.

I don't know why I was surprised when they germinated. But germinate they did. I still have one of original seedlings on my desk, staring at me as I type. It's almost a foot and a half tall.

That started me down a rabbit hole of dwarf citrus exploration.

Today I have a growing collection of citrus varieties that have been received to enthusiastic acclaim by my customers.

It includes:

Thai Lime (also known as Makrut or Kaffir Lime)
Key Lime
Australian Finger Lime
Persian Sweet Lime
Mandarin Orange
Calamondin Orange (also known as Filipino Lime)
Bitter Orange

All of these are available for sale at eastnashgreens.com. I have a dedicated page as well: East Nash Greens.

I would be most grateful if you would like and follow the page. It would make me even happier if you would share it to your network!

And check out the blog as well. In particular the latest post. It contains a recipe for Tom Kha G*i soup, a Thai comfort food classic Don't miss it if you're a foodie and love exploring new tastes.

Bring a little sunshine into your life with dwarf citrus seedlings. These cute little trees will brighten a corner of your home with glossy green leaves, intensely perfumed blossoms and -- when the time is right -- fruit!

Choose from:

Dwarf Persian Sweet Lime, (also known as Lima dulce, Indian Sweet lime, and Palestinian Sweet lime) an aromatic, juicy, low-acid citrus fruit with a distinctive mildly sweet taste and subtle notes of honey. $32

Dwarf Mandarin Orange, well-adapted to indoor growing, yield small, sweet bright orange fruits which are easier to peel than oranges and less acidic, are loaded with vitamins and minerals and can be eaten fresh, in salads, or in desserts. $23

Australian Finger Limes, also known as citrus caviar, are native to the lowland subtropical rainforests of Australia. When the fruit of this unique plant is cut, hundreds of little lime "pearls" spill out, each one yielding a tart, delicious juice when bitten. $28

Dwarf Thai Lime, whose crushed leaves emit an intense citrus fragrance and are used in Indonesian, Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Thai cuisine. $23

Dwarf Key Lime, well known for its namesake pie. A hybrid citrus that bears cute little greenish-yellow golfball sized fruits. Easy to grow indoors, the tree can begin bearing fruit in as little as two years. $18 - $28

Dwarf Calamondin OrangešŸŠ (also known as Filipino LIme, Calamondin Lime, or Calamondino) is a small citrus tree that is a natural hybrid of mandarins and kumquats. The rind is green when ripe and the flesh is orange. Delicious tart, lime-flavored fruits reach an inch in diameter and can be used in jams and jellies or eaten right off the tree. $28

Dwarf Bitter Orange, a hardy citrus variety that bears small sour orange fruits and aromatic green leaves. The fruits are valued for their use in preserves. They also have medicinal benefits. $18

Seedlings are between 3 and 9 inches tall and will start bearing fruit at various times depending on variety. See https://eastnashgreens.com/products/Dwarf-Citrus-Trees-c142300873 for more information.

All seedlings can be picked up in Murray, Kentucky. Please message me to make an appointment.

Gardening is like voting.

I wrote this post in 2020. It’s just as relevant today (if not more so). If the upcoming elections are on your mind and you're searching for a different way to talk to those in your orbit about the things that are keeping you up at night, read and share this for an alternate perspective.

ā€œI belong to several gardening groups on Facebook. On these pages, certain kinds of questions are asked on a regular basis. These questions are mostly variations on ā€˜what is this bug and should I kill it?’ ā€

Many who take the journey into the world of gardening do so with lovely pictures of gloriously abundant gardens dancing in their imaginations. In these airbrushed spreads, nary a blade of grass is out of place, not a chewed leaf or aphid infestation. There are no squirrels munching the tomatoes, no cabbage moths feasting on the kale, no wasp nests under the shed eaves. And this, these gardeners (both new and seasoned) think, is the way it’s supposed to be. Glossy perfection all the way.

But the notion that it is possible to achieve perfection in a garden is a lie.
A garden is an arena of competing interests.

There is the aforementioned gardener’s interest.

There are microorganisms that populate the soil, up to several hundred million tiny critters that would fit in an area smaller than a teaspoon. They provide the plants the means to create their own food — an essential function. Their work is carried out in the dark, largely invisible…
