Three houses down, somebody is going to light the first fire of the year one of these nights, and you will know it before they do.

It is always a clear, still, cold night, because that is the night that finally sends somebody to the woodpile. And a clear still night does something else: the ground cools fast, the air near it goes cold and heavy, and a lid of warmer air settles over the top. The smoke from that first chimney cannot climb through the lid. It rolls down the roof and lies along the street, and the whole neighborhood gets it.

That is why the first woodsmoke of the year always smells so strong. It is not more smoke. It is the same smoke, kept low by the same cold that lit the fire.

If the nights are turning cold where you are, step out at bedtime this week and breathe. The first time it is there, write down the date. The furnace and the calendar can argue about when fall starts; your street decided the night the smoke came.
