Tomorrow, we close the doors to the Smokin’ Oaks market.

It’s hard to put into words what this place has meant—not just to us, but to everyone who walked through these doors.

What started as a vision became years of conversations, education, advocacy, and the quiet, daily work of proving there is another way to build a food system.

It became relationships with farmers and producers who cared deeply about the land. It became helping families understand where their food came from and why it mattered. It became standing up for transparency, stewardship, and the belief that trust should exist between the people who grow our food and the people who eat it.

None of that happened because of one person.

To every customer who chose to support local when it wasn’t always the easiest choice—thank you.

To every farmer and producer who entrusted us with the fruits of your labor—thank you.

To every team member who chose this mission, who gave your heart to the work, your time to this community, and your trust to a vision bigger than any one of us—thank you.

You helped build something that mattered.

While tomorrow marks the end of this chapter, it does not mark the end of what we’ve always believed.

We still believe food should be clean, traceable, and rooted in relationships.

We still believe farmers deserve a food system that values stewardship over scale.

We still believe communities should have the opportunity to know—and help shape—where their food comes from.

Those convictions didn’t begin with this market, and they don’t end with it.

As we pursue the next chapter through a community-owned cooperative, we hope you’ll join us. Our commitment remains the same: to keep fighting for a better food system rooted in stewardship, transparency, and community.

If regenerative agriculture is better, why isn’t everyone doing it?

It’s a fair question.

Most people assume the biggest barrier is demand. They think if more people wanted regenerative food, more farms would simply produce it.

But that’s only part of the story.

The way our food system is financed influences the way it’s built.

When financing rewards faster returns and predictable production, farmers are often pressured to make decisions that prioritize speed and output. Those decisions shape everything that follows from how food is grown to what ultimately reaches our plates.

This isn’t about blaming farmers. It’s about understanding the incentives they’re working within.

If we want a different food system, we have to start by understanding the one we have.

Understanding the system is the first step. Building something different is the next.

A local food system doesn’t happen by accident.

It starts with farmers who care deeply about the way food is grown.

It grows through markets, relationships, and organizations that help connect communities with the people producing their food.

And it depends on something we don’t always think of ourselves as being: participants.

Because a local food system isn’t something we simply buy into. It’s something we build together.

Every meal, every market, every conversation, and every decision to support local helps strengthen the communities we’re all part of.

That’s worth building.

Supporting local farmers matters. Every market visit, every purchase it matters.

But there’s a difference between buying local food and building a local food system.

Buying food supports today’s operations.

Building a food system means thinking beyond today’s harvest and investing in the land, infrastructure, processing, and distribution required to produce food for the long term.

Food security doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s built over years through farms, infrastructure, and communities willing to invest in something larger than themselves.

Most people support local food.

Few get to think about what it takes to ensure local food systems still exist decades from now.

That’s the work we’re in.

So what does it actually mean to be part of the cooperative?

Every time you shop with us, you’re already part of this, and that matters more than you might think. A cooperative is simply a way to be part of it that lasts longer than any one visit.

At its core, a cooperative is owned by the people it feeds. Members are owners of a regenerative farm and the market it supports with a voice in what we’re all building, and a real stake in food security.

Owning the farm and the market together means the people who build it are part of what it protects. If you care about where your food comes from, you’ve already started down this road.

Membership is just the place that caring naturally leads. It usually starts simply. You shop. You bring a friend. You start to feel like this place is yours. And at some point the natural next step is to make that true — to own a piece of it.

This is how a food system gets rebuilt: not by outsiders, but by the people who already love it deciding to own and protect it.

Membership is how that care becomes lasting — a difference that outlives any single visit, and holds for the people who come after.

Most people never meet the person who decides what ends up on a grocery store shelf.

A buying team picks it. An algorithm reorders it. The food shows up, and no one in the building could tell you which farm it came from — or whether there was a farm at all.

That’s the food system most of us inherited. Anonymous by design.

We’re building the opposite. Every product in our case has gone through a person who knows where it came from, knows the farm, and can answer for it because a real local food system isn’t built on logistics, it’s built on relationships.

That’s the whole difference between buying food and knowing your food. This is what we mean when we talk about a food system worth owning. Not a slogan a different way of putting food on a shelf.

Some of you in words. Some of you just came in. You shopped. You brought a friend. You told us you weren’t going anywhere. We’ve felt every one of you who walked through our doors these past days, and we don’t have a big enough word for it.

Here’s what we want you to know: that — what you did this week — is the whole idea.

We told you we’re in a season of restructuring. What we didn’t say yet is where it leads. This isn’t a story about holding on. It’s about building the thing that was always meant to come next — a cooperative. A farm and a market owned by the community that loves it, structured so it can never be quietly sold out from under you, built to make honest food reachable for the people who never had access to it.

That’s the direction. And we’ll be honest with you, the way we’ve tried to be all along: we can’t get there without you. Not one person with deep pockets — a community.

The same community that just showed us, this week, exactly what that looks like.

Hi Nashville Family,

As many of you have seen, there’s been recent news about Smokin’ Oaks and our Chapter 11 reorganization.

When people hear the word “bankruptcy,” it often raises concerns and leaves room for misunderstanding. We wanted to speak directly to the community that has supported us from the beginning.

First and foremost: Smokin’ Oaks is not closing its doors.

Our farm is still farming.
Our market is still open.
Our team is still here.
And our mission remains unchanged.

For years, we’ve worked to build something different — a food system rooted in regenerative agriculture, direct relationships with farmers, and greater transparency in where food comes from. A place where families can know and trust the people growing and raising their food.

Building a different food system isn’t easy. It takes investment, infrastructure, perseverance, and a community willing to believe it’s possible.

After extensive efforts to restructure outside of court, we made the decision to file Chapter 11 Subchapter V so we could continue operating while reorganizing certain financial obligations and strengthening the foundation of what we’re building.

That vision still includes the cooperative we’ve been building toward with many of you over the past year — a future where this is something the community helps shape, not just shop from. This process doesn’t change that direction. If anything, it’s part of laying a foundation strong enough to reach it.

Most of all, thank you.

Thank you for your trust, your support, and your belief that food can be grown, sourced, and shared differently.

Our doors are open, our team is here, and we’re honored to continue serving Nashville every day.
