Robert Orr-SYSCO Past & Present Employees Robert Orr-SYSCO Foodservices Company became SYSCO Nashville in 2008, but the company's proud history stretches back to its founding by Robert Orr, Sr. Nelson.

and his brothers in 1859. They came to America from Ireland with little more than a few pieces of silver, but through hard work and ingenuity they steadily built a viable dry goods business on what is today 2nd Avenue in Downtown Nashville. In the 1920's, Robert Orr, Jr. sold the business to 'Boss" Cunningham and the company continued its steady growth. Eventually, Robert Orr & Company outgrew the

2nd Avenue warehouse and was relocated to a larger facility off Charlotte Avenue. After the death of Mr. Cunningham, Glen Nelson was elected president, and along with John and Bud Cunningham, Robert Orr & Company became one of the largest food distributors in Tennessee. In the 1960's, plans were drawn to begin construction of a state-of-the-art distribution facility located off of Centennial Blvd. in West Nashville. In 1972, Robert Orr & Company merged with Houston, Texas based SYSCO Corporation to become Robert Orr-SYSCO. Under Mr. Nelson's leadership, Robert Orr-SYSCO added innovative products and wares such frozen foods and perishables. Famous Hermitage Brand coffee continued to be roasted at the West Nashville location utilizing the same recipe that was purchased from the Cheek Family in the 1920's when they sold the "Maxwell House" name to the forerunner of General Foods. In 1980, Burton H. Hummell was named president after the sudden passing of Mr. For the next 16 years, Mr. Hummell guided the company's growth to include a full-line of products and services which were unmatched by any competitor in the region. Sales eventually topped $500 million annually, and shipping volume often exceeded more than 100,000 cases per night. Robert Orr-SYSCO could take orders from customers until 5 PM located hundreds of miles away from Nashville and deliver to them before 7 AM the following morning. Its customers included restaurants, schools, churches, and eat-away-from-home organizations throughout Middle and East Tennessee, Southern Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. Upon Hummell's retirement in 1996, Nick Taras was named President and Chief Executive Officer. THIS PAGE IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH SYSCO NASHVILLE OR SYSCO CORPORATION.

Here are a few pictures that I came across recently: (TOP) Mario Ferrari and Dad at the Chaine des Rotisseurs BBQ. Dad served as the Bailliages for many years. (Bottom LEFT) Dad, Mom, the Honorable Sandra Fulton (TN Secretary of Tourism), and the Honorable Richard Fulton (Mayor of Nashville). Finally, there's a picture of Walter Nunnelly, Dad, and Norm Oleesky holding random packages of food and having an impromptu meeting? (Bottom RIGHT) I think that this might have been shot at the Birmingham Cash and Carry?

Pursuant to Ross' request, we will hold a private family memorial service and schedule a Celebration of Life party at a later date. Here is an advance copy of his obituary:

HUMMELL, Ross Bennett (age 59) of Nashville after a lengthy illness. Preceded in death by his mother, Joan Lapin Hummell; maternal grandparents, Ann Cutler Lapin and Arthur Robert Lapin; paternal grandparents, Martha Ellenstein Hummell and Arnold “Al” Hummell. Survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Anne Perler Hummell; father Burton H. Hummell (Linda) of Nashville, brothers Art Hummell (Mady) of Nashville, Reed Hummell (Taylor) of Kingston Springs; brother-in-law Marc Perler (Paulette) of Tupelo, MS, sister-in-law Lynne Perler (Martin Larson) of Nashville; many nieces and nephews, including Reace Hummell, Reilly Hummell, Ethan Hummell, Keith Perler (Melissa), Stephanie Garst (Barry), Andrea Sour, and Chad Sour (Jill). Ross distinguished himself academically, in business, and as an entrepreneur. Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 1, 1957, he attended San Mateo High School (San Mateo, CA) and University High School (Los Angeles, CA) before receiving an undergraduate degree with honors in psychology from UCLA. Ross relocated to Tennessee in 1980 and pursued a masters degree in business administration at the University of Tennessee/Knoxville. He led a small team of graduate school students to a first place finish in the Southeastern Conference’s annual mock business contest in 1982. After graduation, Ross joined SYSCO Corporation in Houston, Texas as a Procurement Officer before being promoted to Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Robert Orr-SYSCO in Nashville. Later, Ross was promoted to Executive Vice President of Tartan-SYSCO in Philadelphia, and then returned to Robert Orr-SYSCO as the Senior Vice President of Operations. In 1997, he led an asset purchase of White Way Cleaners and was elected president. After selling the business in 2002, Ross founded ProClean Services of Tennessee, and it grew to become one of the largest independent restaurant chemical/institutional warewash distributors in Middle Tennessee. An avid reader, dog-lover, and a lifelong Oakland A’s and Raiders fan, Ross was equally comfortable troubleshooting computer networking issues or correctly answering every Jeopardy question on TV, as he was with tackling major plumbing and electrical repairs. Known by many as a quiet intellectual, his close friends and family also appreciated his dry wit and infectious laugh. The Hummell family wishes to thank Ross’ medical team and the staff of St. Thomas West’s 7C ward for their tireless care and diligence. A celebration of life will be scheduled in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to the American Cancer Society’s Patient Transportation program or a charitable organization of your choice.
