Riverhill Farm

Riverhill Farm There’s a great deal about the place that inspires respect. Riverhill Farm is a community-based farm. We sell most of our produce within ten miles of the farm.

Now in its 12th year, Riverhill Farm is a new farm but, as those who visit us at the farm come to appreciate, it is a place which has a long history of human use. There are Native American grinding rocks used to process acorns from the abundant native oaks, and many features of the landscape reflect the work of the Italian homestead farmers who inhabited the farm between the mid- to late-1800’s an

d the mid-1900’s. Apart from enjoying the seasonal fruits (and vegetables!) of our labor, those of us who work here come to enjoy the place itself. The farm occupies a vital niche between and among habitats-oak woodland and chaparral, pine forest and grassland, seasonal creeks and north slope Yuba River environs-making it a vibrant landscape full of life. We mark the seasons most of all by the passing over of great flocks of Sandhill Cranes that bring us to stop our work in the fields to delight in the sound of their calls. We’ve come to appreciate that Riverhill Farm is not just a place for human use, as evidenced by an abundance of mountain lions, bears, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, skunks, raccoons, hawks, herons, kingfishers, geese, ducks (and gophers). We are currently farming on 10 acres, with plans for additional acreage in the coming years. At the center of the farm is our farmstand, the hub around which most of our farm’s activities revolve. It’s an inviting structure that provides shade for our produce and for our customers, and is a welcome spot to sit and visit when you come to the farm. The farm owners are Alan Haight and Jo McProud. While on any given day of the week you will find us hard at work in the fields, we are rarely working alone. What our customers have come to appreciate about the farm would not be possible without the daily work of our employees. We are fortunate to be helped by individuals with extraordinary cheerfulness, dedication and a willingness to work hard under demanding conditions, and a dedication to adding their own efforts to making the world a better place for all, both on the farm and off. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our community with the highest quality, freshest and tastiest produce. We are endeavoring to build and maintain a farm that will serve this community for generations to come.

It has been a while since we (Alan and Jo) have communicated to you, but we feel that we need to reach out and let the community know more about the status of the farm. We have always viewed Riverhill as a vital part of the community and understand that many of you have come to think of it as ‘your farm’. This is a sentiment that we encouraged and cherished while we owned and operated the farm.
As most of you are aware, we sold the farm nearly two years ago and we have since moved into Nevada City. The farm was purchased from us by an old friend, Tracy, who was motivated to give us the opportunity to retire and to keep the farm in operation. We will forever be grateful to Tracy for helping us to make this challenging transition. Unfortunately, Tracy has recently experienced an unforeseen turn in her life and now needs to sell the property.
The recent farmers, Kyle and Melanie, were in the first year of a two-year lease with Tracy, a lease which would have been legally binding on a new owner. While discussing how to make this transition work best for Kyle and Melanie, Tracy offered them the option of a long-term lease of any duration, to be included in the terms of a sale. Kyle and Melanie have instead chosen to leave the farm and move closer to their families in the Chico area, where they are beginning a new farm. We wish them well in their new endeavors.
The farm has gone on the market this week. Our hope is that Tracy will find a buyer with a desire to see it continue as a community farm, but this is not a certain outcome. It is a special place that deserves a special destiny. We only hope that the next inhabitants will treat it with the love and respect that it deserves.

We could not have been more fortunate than to live on this beautiful land and to farm in this wonderful community for the past 20 years. We thank you all for the years of support that you have given to us and to Riverhill Farm.
In gratitude and appreciation,
Jo and Alan
