Time to start some light spring prep. Overalls, check. Mud boots, check. Sun hat, check. Gotta make the best of these nice days in the rollercoaster that is spring!

I could’ve written this myself.

I could’ve written this myself.

owning livestock is beautiful.
but it’s also brutal.

people show the good parts..
the babies, the first steps, the magic.

but not the part where you walk into the barn
and know something’s wrong.

the panic.
the helplessness.
the quiet after.

because we don’t just “have animals.”
we know them. we love them.

and when we lose one… it wrecks you.

you still cry in the stall.
you still carry the guilt.
you still bury them yourself and whisper “i’m sorry” even when you did everything you could.

this life is real.
and it hurts.. because you loved them.

Sharing a bit of vulnerability here – For those of you in our circle, you know the absolute devastation that happened to our homestead during the flood in August. Now we’re ready to share more details.
August brought us just shy of 12 inches of rain in an incredibly short amount of time. We had 4 feet of standing water for hours, with waves soaring above 5 feet. We had rain runoff and flooding water from 3 different directions.
Our 2 guardian dogs would have drown in their houses, had they not been able to escape their fences to get to high ground. To which they were waterlogged, meaning they treaded water for some time.
We lost an ATV, snowblower, two bird coops. Worst of all - 3 honeybee hives lost. 15 turkeys lost. 22 chickens lost. 8 ducks lost. 5 geese lost. 2 guineas lost.
The basement can be replaced, but our birds cannot. The guilt, pain, and sorrow will always remain. We cannot thank enough those who have supported us then and who still do now today.

Looking forward to this new year; Honey Pines is not quitting; we are planning to refresh & reset. New ideas, new plans will finally regain traction. Keep an eye out for an upgraded list of products & plans coming in 2026!!

For those of you who have reached out to ask how to support us, thank you!!!! Family, friends, and strangers - thank you so much!
We’re still making our way navigating the post-trauma and damage of our losses. We’re starting to demo and then rebuild while also trying to maintain as much normalcy as we can - for us and the kids.

*We’ve lost all bee hives so no honey or beeswax products this year like we had hoped.
*Eggs have slowed immensely, we can only offer 1-2 dozen at a time and it may take a bit longer than before.
*We’ve lost all turkeys for those who wanted meat for Thanksgiving.

But we still have jams and am still taking laundry detergent orders!
Jam flavors - blueberry lavender (more like a syrup!). Cherry vanilla. Black raspberry. Peach freezer jam.
Detergent (made to order, will pin post for more details)
Again thank you all!

Hobby farms ARE farms.

We wake up early. We haul feed. We clean coops. We build, fix, tend, and care — every single day. We deal with heartbreak, with predators, with loss. And we keep showing up because the animals depend on us.

Maybe we’re not supplying grocery chains. Maybe we don’t have 500 acres or employees. But we’re still growing food, raising animals with care, and learning what it takes to be good stewards of the land.

Small doesn’t mean insignificant.
Backyard doesn’t mean uncommitted.
And hobby doesn’t mean it’s just for fun.

We do this because we love it- because we want to be more self sufficient- and because we love the animals in our care. Hobby farmers are building skills, feeding families, and passing down knowledge that matters.

If you’ve ever raised a flock, pulled your first harvest, or stayed up late to nurse a sick animal — you know it’s real work.

And if that’s not farming, I don’t know what is.

Owning livestock is beautiful, but it’s also brutal.

People show the good parts. The chicks hatching. The newborns learning to stand. That first wobble. That first feed. And yes, it’s magical. It’s what keeps you going.

But what they don’t show is the grief.
The way you walk into the barn and something’s wrong.
The panic. The helplessness. The silence that follows.

We don’t just own animals, we love them.
Even when we have dozens, we know each one. Their quirks. Their sounds. Their routines.
We bottle feed them. We cheer for their first steps. We hope for them.

And when we lose one, it wrecks us.
No, it doesn’t get easier.
Not when you loved them like that.

You still cry in the stall.
You still carry the guilt.
You still bury them with your own two hands and whisper “I’m sorry” even if you did everything you could.

This life is raw.
It’s real.
It’s soul work.
And it hurts, because love always does.
