Happy Friday friends! Our farm update for today is simple- we have berries! Lots and lots of berries. The late freeze did hit us a little harder than we originally thought and you will see the damaged ends on some of the plants but we are so fortunate to have the amount of berries that we currently do, especially after digging up and moving these bushes just 3 months ago!

This weekend we will start setting the posts for the net (thankful for multiple dry days in a row that allowed us to actually get into the field to work!). The net will need to go up in the near future to protect the berries from birds and deer so you can actually have some to pick- they won’t share otherwise πŸ˜†.

Thanks for following along. We are getting closer and closer to picking season and we can’t wait to meet you! Have a great weekend β˜€οΈπŸ«πŸ’™

Fun fact Friday! When you pick blueberries with us, we will charge by the pound. Did you know that there are approximately 200 blueberries in a pound? You can pick as many or as few as you’d like. We will provide the buckets.. all you have to do is come ready to pick. One of our favorite fun facts is that some of the picking buckets that we purchased from the former farm still say TRADER HORN! We jokingly say that was the main reason why we knew this was meant to be!

If you are unable to walk through the field and pick or if you’re short on time, you’ll also be able to give us a call and one of our expert pickers (our kidsπŸ˜†) will pick your order and deliver it right to your car. Enjoy your weekend and pray for warm weather- the blueberries definitely prefer it!! πŸ’™πŸ«

Fun fact Friday! Would you believe that more than one billion pounds of blueberries are produced in North America annually? That is equal to the weight of 2 large cruise ships or 12,500 fully loaded semi trucks or more than 2,000 Statues of Liberty.

Our bushes should produce around 9,500 pounds of blueberries in a season, which would fill our entire bathtub nearly 24 times! Blueberries like warm days and cool nights so we are hopeful that this weather helps to generate a prosperous crop even after the stress of this winter's transplant process. Even if we don't have the full crop in our first season that the bushes have produced in years past, we are still incredibly excited to share our bounty with you! Enjoy the warm weekend (finally)! πŸ’™πŸ«

It's Friday- time for a farm update. We currently have a large pile of wood chips in our yard that we are using to cover the rows to prevent w**ds. We are using a convenient tractor attachment that shoots the chips out but it is still a time consuming process. However, we can confidently say that there are no w**d killers being used on our blueberries!

We also thought that this might be a good time to give a little shout out to some of the local businesses that have played a small part in our farming venture. The wood chips came from Marshall Tree Experts, our t-shirts came from Venezie Sporting Goods & Custom Apparel (we just did a fresh restock- let us know if you need a shirt! πŸ˜‰), our signage is from The One Designer, LLC, and the sign frame and planter box was built by our good friend Micheal Galbreath (if you can dream it, he can build it and we will sell his wooden crafts at the farm too).

Our mailing address is New Castle, PA but we are located in Wayne Township which is right outside of Ellwood City. If you are unfamiliar with the Ellwood City area, we HIGHLY encourage you to check it out when you come to pick blueberries with us. Ellwood has some of the coolest small businesses, the absolute best restaurants (ask us for recommendations- this post would be 6 pages long if we listed them all!), great ice cream shops, and so much more. We are proud to be a small part of the commerce in our corner of Lawrence County and we encourage you to shop local! Enjoy your weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! πŸ«πŸ’™

Fun fact Friday! This one is a repeat fact for our new followers who might be wondering why we are named Duck Run Blueberry Farm.. Duck Run is the name of the stream that runs alongside the blueberry field and will be used to irrigate the plants. It seemed fitting to incorporate this small piece of Wayne Township geography into our little farm and it made for a pretty cool logo πŸ˜‰ we hope you have a wonderful weekend!!πŸ¦†πŸ«πŸ’™

Fun photo Friday! Check out what we captured on our trail camera- well, that is until he knocked it over! This camera is located 300 yards or so from our blueberry field. Pennsylvania black bears are omnivores that feed on vegetation, insects and berries. While we are thrilled that the black bear population is thriving and we would love to see one in person, we hope they stay away from our field. Fortunately, they prefer high-sugar ripe fruits so our netting system will be up to deter them by the time our berries ripen. We will see if he visits any more after we get the trail camera put back up! Have a great weekend!

Fun Fact Friday! Last week, we mentioned that April is Earth Month and emphasized the importance of protecting our pollinators. As we get ready to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, one simple thing you can do to help the bee population is to choose native plants when buying or planting your flowers for the spring season. Many of the blooms sold at big box stores have been cultivated for human aesthetics and hardiness which often sacrifices pollinator needs such as pollen quantity, nutrition, and the bloom patterns that attract them. By sourcing flowers that are native to our region, you are helping the bees! For us here in Western Pennsylvania, look for Black Eyed Susan, Golden Ragwort, Petunias, or Mountain Laurel- the state flower of Pennsylvania. No green thumb? No problem! One of the easiest things you can do is avoid cutting your grass! Let those dandelions, clover, and other lawn "w**ds" grow for a few days before mowing. Don't treat your yard with chemicals either. The "w**ds" provide a critical food source in early spring and they look nice after a drab, brown winter. Our planet needs our help to thrive, because every day is Earth Day! Enjoy your weekend friends!🫐🐝🌎

Fun Fact Friday- We have buds! We are so relieved that the bushes are budding and seem to be adapting to our farm. Each bud contains 5-10 potential flowers. Once the buds break open and flowers appear, they are receptive for 3-5 days, relying on bees for pollination. Shortly after pollination, the bloom falls off and a small green berry appears. Each bloom has the potential to produce a single berry. From there, the berries take between 6 and 12 weeks to ripen and that's when we will tell you to come visit us to pick them!

We've said it before and we will say it again- protect the pollinators, especially during Earth Month (April) because one third of our food depends on them! Have a wonderful weekend!🫐🐝

Fun fact Friday! Do you leave out carrots for the Easter Bunny the night before Easter? Did you know that rabbits don't actually eat carrots?? They're too sugary and fatty for rabbits to digest. Do you know what wild rabbits will eat though? Blueberries!!! While they prefer the blueberry plants themselves, rabbits will eat blueberries if they are available. We aren't saying to leave blueberries out for the Easter Bunny on Saturday night but we aren't NOT saying that either πŸ˜‰

Sending Easter blessings to you and your families! "He is not here; for He is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay." Matthew 28:6
