Have you ever heard of bullwinkle disease in deer? It’s the nickname hunters use for cases where a whitetail’s snout becomes badly swollen and distorted, often giving the deer a cartoonish look. It’s usually caused by a bacterial infection that gets into small cuts or injuries around the mouth or nose, sometimes after fighting or feeding on rough vegetation. The swelling can make it harder for the deer to eat or breathe if it gets severe. It isn’t a genetic trait and it’s not something that spreads through the herd like a virus. It looks alarming, but it’s really a localized infection, not a mystery disease, and it’s been showing up in deer photos for decades.
