Last night, I burned a loaf.

Not just any loaf—a lemon blueberry sourdough that had all the makings of something special. Hours of planning, mixing, fermenting, laminating, shaping, and waiting. It was beautiful going into the oven.

And then I left it in too long.

The outside came out black and crispy. Ruined. I was devastated. There was no way I could give it to the customer.

This morning, I finally cut it open.

And you know what?

The inside was absolutely beautiful.

A gorgeous swirl of lemon and blueberry. A perfect crumb. Sweet, soft, flavorful. Everything I had hoped it would be.

As I stood at the counter peeling away the burnt crust and feeding pieces to Jett—who was more than happy to help and seemed convinced I’d accidentally created the world’s greatest dog treat—it got me thinking.

Life does that to us sometimes.

We get burned by circumstances, disappointments, mistakes, loss, grief, criticism, or simply the weight of carrying too much for too long. We look at the outside and think we’re damaged, worn down, or ruined.

But often, underneath the parts that got singed, our heart is still there.

Still kind.
Still curious.
Still hopeful.
Still capable of creating something beautiful.

Sometimes the outside tells one story, while the inside tells another.

So if life has you feeling a little burnt around the edges lately, maybe give yourself the same grace I gave that loaf this morning.

You might discover there’s still something wonderful inside. ❤️🍋🫐🐾

🥖 The hardest part of baking sourdough? Waiting.

That beautiful loaf may be fresh from the oven, but the baking process isn’t quite finished yet.

As tempting as it is to slice into a warm loaf right away, letting your sourdough cool completely is an important part of the process. As the bread cools, the crumb continues to set and excess moisture redistributes throughout the loaf. Cutting too soon can leave you with a gummy texture and a squished crumb instead of those beautiful airy pockets we all love.

Trust me—I know the smell makes it feel nearly impossible to wait. 😅

A little patience goes a long way. Give your loaf time to rest, and you’ll be rewarded with better texture, better flavor, and a much prettier slice.

So if you’ve ever wondered why bakers stare lovingly at a loaf sitting on the counter for hours… now you know. ❤️🥖

✨ Today’s Double Bake: Jalapeño Cheddar Pullman Loaf & Plain Boule Loaf for my dear friend Amber Nicole 🤍

Nikki and I met on the job at a rehab hospital in Dayton where she trained me to do her job before she moved onto better endeavors and we have been friends ever since. I had the pleasure of watching her youngest baby during my initial stint as a SAHM after having Weston. We have so many good memories together.

There’s something extra special about creating a custom sourdough loaf from scratch ✨

This special request garlic inclusion loaf started with organic flour and garlic-infused avocado oil worked directly into the original dough mix for a rich, savory flavor from the very beginning.

During the laminating process, I folded in frozen grated butter, fresh garlic, a touch of oregano, and fresh parsley… and WOW. The smell alone was enough to make the whole kitchen feel cozy. 🧄🌿

The finished loaf baked up beautifully with a soft, flavorful crumb and the most incredible golden crust.

One of my favorite things about sourdough is how creative and intentional each loaf can be. No shortcuts — just time, technique, and really good ingredients. 🤍

Homemade flaky sourdough pastry filled with sweet strawberries and tart rhubarb, topped with a strawberry glaze and a little sprinkle happiness because life’s too short for boring pastries. 💕

These taste like summer mornings, childhood nostalgia, and “just one more bite” all wrapped into one.

Made from scratch in small batches with our sourdough goodness, of course. ✨
