Tomorrow kicks off National Farmers Market Week! Celebrate local food and the farmers that grow it by shopping our three weekly markets!
Local food has been in the spotlight as food safety concerns continue across the country. One thing that sets locally grown food apart from the rest? Food miles.
Food miles are “the distance food travels from the location where it is grown to the location where it is consumed, or in other words, the distance food travels from farm to plate.” Basically, the smaller that number (an average of 75 miles for CCFM agriculture producers versus an average of 1,400 miles for imported, mass-produced produce), the better. This is just one of many of the reasons why shopping at local farmers markets is better for you, better for local farmers, better for the environment, and better for your local economy!
