New this week: handcrafted hot sauces, sparkling beverages, fresh produce and more! Ever since I built the massive shelving unit around the fridge in our third room, I’ve being eagerly filling it up. Let us know what else you’d like to see in here! Our concept was always to be the eco-friendly cornerstore, stocked with all the essentials you use everyday, but without any of the plastic packaging.

This weekened, we have locally grown garlic, potatoes, kale, eggplant, hot peppers, shish*tos, red cabbage and plums.

Anne from Tinkertown Provisions, based in Oneonta, NY, hand-delivered three cases of her artisanal hot sauces. Each one is crafted with unique flavors like fresh plums (Rain), rhubarb (Haze), and garlic scapes in the cult classic Sea Sparkle.

The Lucky Ox (NYC) makes Asian American sodas inspired by nostalgic flavors like Pandan Coconut, Matcha Lemonade, Taiwanese Roasted Pineapple and Vietnamese Salted Lemonade.

We will be open Saturday 11AM-6PM and Sunday 11AM-5PM. Please note we will be closed this Monday (July 27) to spend time with friends visiting us from the other side of the country. See you soon!

Stressed out? Me too. Cool off with a calming kombucha, available in light, botanical flavors like Lavender with Black & White Peony Tea, or Chamomile & Mint with Kukicha Green Tea.

We’re really excited to start adding drinks to our shop! We picked up these kombuchas from Laughing Gut in Poughkeepsie earlier this week. One thing I love about their recipes is their focus on the tea. Kombucha is a gut healthy probiotic beverage, but too many makers mix in overly sweet fruit juices that mask its natural flavor.

Laughing Gut’s philosophy is simple and straightforward: they brew a delicious base with great, organic teas, let it naturally ferment, and add fresh organic herbs and spices. The result is a gently carbonated, refreshing beverage that won’t give you a sugar rush.

For a limited time, we also have their special summer flavor, Jalapeño Lime with Jasmine Tea, a perfect mocktail! Star Anise & Orange Zest with Nepali Black Tea might just be my favorite.

New soap! Poison ivy soap was a popular request. This one is made with jewelweed and soothing oatmeal; it’s also great for itchy bug bites.

The Ash House also brings us exotic scents like Noir (vanilla with cedarwood, amyris and clove), and Neroli (with Petitgrain, bitter orange, and ylang-ylang). Their Bare Triple Butter Bar is deeply moisturizing with no added scent.

Along with eight new body bars, we also have a Linseed Wood Soap made with citronella and pine. This household bar helps clean and condition wood floors, furniture, butcher blocks, cutting boards, and more.

Aside from a wonderful assortment of scents and uses, what we really love about these soaps is their sustainability. They are all palm oil and package free. The ingredients are stamped into each bar. I’ve never seen that before; have you? Let us know what other zero waste products you’d like to see!

New in our fridge! Local zucchini, eggplant, red cabbage, napa cabbage, curly kale, basil and flat leaf parsley - all from our friends at Laughing Fork Farm. We also restocked our dairy-free Queso from Fabalish and added two new flavors: Tzatziki and Fry Sauce.

All of Fabalish’s delicious dips and sauces are made with the magic of chickpeas in New Jersey and are vegan! These new flavors were a special request. Let us know what else you’d like to see here!

When the weather is hot, I love eating cold, quick-to-make dishes, like these peanut noodles with lightly-pickled red cabbage. This week, we have fresh cabbage, kale, snap peas and fennel from Laughing Fork Farm. The red cabbage would also be great in a slaw or salad for your weekend barbecue.

Meera Sodha’s “Mouth-Numbing Noodles with Chili Oil and Red Cabbage” is one of our favorite summer recipes. It can be found in her cookbook East, or free online from the Guardian. We used the organic udon noodles we sell in bulk and fresh mint from our garden. The sauce is made with organic peanut butter, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and sesame seeds, all of which we carry package-free.

We made our chili oil from scratch with our bulk Sichuan peppercorns (have you tried them yet?) but you could also save some time by picking up a ready-made jar from our shelves.

And yes, I am holding that fennel like a fish. 🙃 Food photography is hard. Stay cool!

On Thursday, Kay became the 6th person to redeem their loyalty rewards! They bought almonds, black peppercorns, jalapeño cheesy dip, chocolate chips, seitan, pine nuts, olive oil, bamboo toilet paper, and kale, which was shared with their turtle, Galahad. When you redeem your points, you get $10 off your purchase.

We’ve actually given out rewards 7 times; Gabby’s gotten it twice! We started this program to thank our regular customers, and to encourage our newer shoppers to come back. Our rewards program is free to join. Will you be next?

Swipe to enjoy a cute video of Galahad enjoying a healthy snack.

The other day, I was talking to one of our regulars and she said, “Oh, so you’re so much more than a cashier”. I think very little of my job is being a cashier. It’s mostly filling things up, washing dishes, placing orders and problem-solving. A big part of my job is design. Everything in this shop is in here because of me. Any label you see is one I wrote, designed and printed. I hand-painted all of the wooden signs. I chose the paint colors on the walls.

Sometimes people email me like this is a faceless entity. This is a small, neighborhood shop run by two people. The same two people you see every time you come in here. We live down the street and I walk here every morning. Sometimes I stay up late at night working on labels, like last night when I was hand-tracing this image from our soy sauce box.

I use paper labels and wheat paste for the hundreds (thousands?) of bulk items we store in glass jars around our shop. But paper labels aren’t great for the fridge. So I made this one for our soy sauce and I plan on making another one for our tamari, as well as our maple syrup and rice vinegar too.

We carry a lot of Asian condiments from Wan Ja Shan. Many are made in Middletown, NY, and Jim drives down to pick them up because they give us great prices. All of them are vegan and the majority are gluten-free. Our organic tamari and organic soy sauce are $4 per pound. You can bring in your empty containers to fill up, which will save you about $3-4, compared to buying pre-packaged bottles.

Jim went there on Tuesday (his day off) and brought back a bunch of new products. Our organic offerings include: soy sauce, tamari, Worcestershire sauce, shiitake stir-fry sauce, teriyaki sauce, rice vinegar, and hoisin sauce. We also have hard to find ingredients like mirin, black bean soy sauce, vegetarian oyster sauce and formosa sweet chili sauce. Come see what’s new! Support truly small business!

New for this week: fresh snap peas, curly kale and rainbow chard from Laughing Fork Farm, plus the return of our housemade seitan!

Last night, we had stir fried seitan with bok choy. We tossed the seitan in arrowroot for a crispy coating, pan fried it, and served it alongside organic wild rice and a simple bok choy recipe from The Woks of Life, made with ginger, garlic and white pepper. Come pick up something delicious!

We’ll be open Wednesday-Saturday 11AM-6PM. We’re taking off Sunday, June 21 (Fathers’ Day) to visit my cousins.

We have a brand new fridge! Yesterday, we went to Laughing Fork in Highland, NY to pick up some fresh leafy greens they just harvested from their fields. We currently have lacinato kale, bok choy, rainbow chard and red lettuce.

Fresh, local vegetables were always part of our plan, but this tiny shop has had a lot of challenges. When we opened, we purchased a secondhand refrigerator from a local business, but it broke down last summer and it took us 6 months to find someone to look at it. Spoiler alert: he couldn’t fix it.

After a lot of searching (and struggling), we finally found this replacement and we’d love to fill it with food purchased directly from local farmers. Shipping cases of out-of-season produce from across the country on refrigerator trucks just isn’t our style.

I love the idea of people walking down Main Street, turning the corner into our shop and grabbing everything they need for dinner. Don’t you? What would you like to see us stock this summer? The more interest we have, the more veggies we’ll be able to carry.

PS: Amanda () said it was important for our new fridge to be pretty. Please tell our fridge you think it’s cute; it was really expensive. We’ll be able to add more things to it with your support!
