The reason you know we’re from the boroughs of New York City when you walk into Rye Street Deli & Dogs ain’t because of some sign on the wall or some logo.
It’s the way we talk.
The way we sound.
The energy.
The conversations.
The sarcasm.
The old-school shows.
The music.
Talking sports, food, life, memories, and neighborhood stories.
People hanging around for an hour busting chops before they even realize they’re still standing there.
That’s real New York neighborhood culture.
This isn’t “I visited New York a few times” culture.
This is Queens.
Brooklyn.
The Bronx.
Manhattan.
Staten Island.
That fast-paced, blue-collar, neighborhood energy people instantly recognize when they grew up around it.
The way we talk, the businesses we built, the stories we tell, our love for deli culture, food culture, community, bikes, sports, family, and neighborhood hangouts all come from growing up around real New York life.
Growing up around delis, bodegas, diners, pizza shops, candy stores, cafés, bars, corner stores, and neighborhood spots teaches you real quick that food ain’t just food.
It’s comfort.
It’s memories.
It’s community.
It’s connection.
It’s sitting around talking sports, family, old stories, politics, and life while people come and go all day long.
You grow up around strong personalities.
Fast environments.
Different cultures.
Blue-collar workers.
Late nights.
People hustling just trying to survive.
People with rough edges.
Conflict.
Drama.
Loyalty.
Respect.
You learn how to read people fast.
You learn life by watching and experiencing it, not by reading it out of a textbook.
And honestly, there’s a difference between growing up in the five boroughs, Long Island, and outside New York altogether. Not better or worse… just different experiences, different pace, different lifestyles.
But if you truly lived New York culture, whether it was Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, or even parts of Long Island tied into that life, you usually recognize the feeling pretty quickly.
That’s honestly what we tried to recreate with Rye Street Deli & Dogs.
Not just a deli.
A place that feels familiar.
A place that feels real.
A place where people can walk in, grab a sandwich or a hot dog, laugh, talk sports, watch old-school TV, bust chops, and feel comfortable no matter who they are.
Because authentic New York ain’t just geography.
It’s a lived experience and a culture you carry with you no matter where life takes you.
So now we’re curious…
If you were born and raised in New York City, one of the five boroughs, or even Long Island, when you walk into Rye Street Deli & Dogs, do you feel a little piece of home?
And if you’ve never lived there, from everything you’ve heard and seen about New York culture, do you feel like you’re getting a small taste of it when you walk through our doors?
Drop us a comment and let us know if we’ve ever brought you some good energy, showed you some love, made you laugh, made you feel welcome, or maybe even made you feel a little at home when you came in.
And truthfully… maybe people recognize that we miss New York sometimes, like a lot of others do. New York will always be part of who we are, even if it’s changed a lot over the years.
But one thing we’re truly grateful for is all the amazing people we’ve met down here in Florida — from fellow New Yorkers to lifelong Floridians and everyone in between. We appreciate all of you more than you know.
Meet Leighann and myself years before Rye Street Deli & Dogs was even a thought.
Just a few old pictures of us growing up, living life, and being shaped by the streets, neighborhoods, people, and culture of Queens, New York.
The experiences, conversations, energy, friendships, struggles, neighborhood spots, and memories from those years all played a part in helping shape the community atmosphere and vibe we try to create every day at Rye Street Deli & Dogs.
