My son showed up to his father’s funeral wearing a woman’s pink dress — when he told me the real reason, I dropped to my knees in shock.
My husband, Richard, fought cancer for eleven months. I watched the strong man I loved grow too weak to lift his own cup of tea.
Our only son, Daniel, had always been his shadow. He took his father’s illness very hard.
But four months before Richard died, I came home from the pharmacy and heard them shouting.
Daniel stood by the door with a suitcase, tears streaming down his face.
"I can’t believe you asked that of me!"
"I have no other choice," Richard said.
"Then you’ve lost your son!"
Daniel slammed the door so hard that our wedding picture fell from the wall.
I begged Richard to explain, but he only whispered,
"This has to stay between me and Daniel. Please. Don’t ask me anything."
Our son moved three states away. Whenever I called, he said,
"Mom, I love you. But don’t ask me to forgive Dad."
I didn’t know the real reason behind their argument. Meanwhile, Richard was growing weaker with each passing day.
After he died, I tried once more.
"Whatever happened, please come and say goodbye."
After a long silence, Daniel agreed.
On the day of the funeral, I kept watching the chapel doors. Daniel was late. I began to think his resentment was stronger than his love for his father.
But then he came.
And the moment he walked in, whispers rippled through the rows.
Daniel stood there in a woman’s pink dress.
My face burned.
"Daniel, what are you doing? This is your father’s funeral!"
But he didn’t answer me. He laid both hands on the casket and cried so hard that his shoulders shook.
"I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner, Dad. I’m sorry."
I was still shocked, but I decided not to ask any questions.
We said our final goodbye to Richard, and the guests slowly began to leave.
That was when Daniel approached me again. His hands were trembling.
"You always wondered why we fought," he said. "Dad asked me to tell you only after he was gone."
From the dress pocket, he pulled out something small, flat, and wrapped in tissue paper.
"I’ll understand if you hate us after this," he whispered.
With his next words, I fell to my knees and burst into tears, unable to believe what my family had hidden from me
