Introducing Harrison Hills Farm! 🌳🪾🗝️

Last month, we were thrilled to welcome Harrison Hills Farm to the Greenmarket! Harrison Hills Farm is a 65-acre organic forest farm nestled at the southern edge of the Berkshire Mountains in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Charles Harrison, the farmer, forester, and founder behind the operation, handcrafts gorgeous cutting boards, serving platters, and wood products from the trees felled for the health and management of the forest. Each is incredibly special and one-of-a-kind.

Find harrisonhillsfarm at the Greenmarket at Rockefeller Greenmarket every Wednesday through October 28! 🪾🌳

FROST ALERT!!

Yesterday, upstate New York experienced an overnight frost. The onset of frost marks a transition in the growing season as delicate summer crops, such as tomatoes, peppers, melons, and, as demonstrated here, lettuce, aren’t built to withstand such cold temps. Tools such as greenhouses and row cover allow farmers to extend the season but nevertheless, the first frost marks a turning point.

Kellie of Kellie Quarton shared yesterday’s morning field check to assess how everything fared in the cold. The row cover they put down the day before did its job and protected the majority of the lettuce! The brassicas, being the cold-hardy fellas they are, were largely unphased. The handful of little gem lettuces that weren’t covered? Toasted.

All this to say, it’s Preserve the Harvest Week in our Fall Greenmarket Cooking Challenge FOR A REASON! Once the frost hits, our days of summer produce are numbered. Preserve the bounty of while it’s here! Submissions are due this Monday at 12PM! 🥒🍓🍅🌶️🌽🫐

GREENMARKET COOKING CHALLENGE WEEK 1: PRESERVE THE HARVEST! 🍅🌶️🍓🍇🥒🌽

The Greenmarket Cooking Challenge is back, this time with a fall edition! Throughout the month of October, we’ll be dropping a weekly cooking challenge. Your job? Head to your local Greenmarket, pick up the ingredient(s) of the week, and show off your culinary creativity!! Whether you’re a seasoned home chef or a casual market shopper, we want to see you work autumnal magic in the kitchen.

Week 1 is not so much about a specific ingredient but about preserving the last of the summer harvest. Think jams, pickles, sauces, salsas, funky ferments, freezer bags full of corn stacked high, herbs pesto’d and dried- GET CREATIVE!

Here’s how to play:

✨ Tune in every Monday throughout October for your weekly challenge!
✨ You have exactly one week to get to your local Greenmarket, get your ingredients, and get cooking. Submissions are due the following Monday at 12PM!
✨ Snap a photo and/or short video of your finished dish featuring that week’s spotlight ingredients and share it with us! You can either post it to your feed and tag , DM it to us, or submit it using the form linked in our bio.
✨ Each week, there will be winners!! Submissions will be shared and winners will be announced on Tuesdays! Winners will receive a limited edition 50th Anniversary Greenmarket tote AND Greenmarket Bucks to shop with at the market.
➡️ Entries will be judged for creativity, presentation, and prominence of the ingredient of the week. You get bonus points for showing out which farmers and/or Greenmarket you sourced from and use of other Greenmarket ingredients such as proteins, bakery products, and value-added ingredients.

We couldn’t think of a better person to help us kick off the Greenmarket Fall Cooking Challenge than Chef Haley of ! Yesterday, she visited us at the Tompkins Square Greenmarket to show off all the ways she’s using ferments in the kitchen. From lacto-fermented tomatillos to kimchi to house-made vinegars, she is the food preservation QUEEN! Thank you, !! 🫙🫧🥬🥫

TWO PAWPAW SIGHTINGS TODAY!!

The ever-elusive pawpaw has been sighted today at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket and the St. George Greenmarket! Bradley Farm brought in a major haul of these wild fruits today as did Rabbits Run Farm!

Pawpaws are the largest edible fruit native to North America. Its yellow flesh tastes like a custardy cross between a mango and a banana. And they are rare! Only a handful of Greenmarket farmers grow them. Not to mention the fruit is fickle: they’re extraordinarily fragile and they’re ripe and ready to eat for only 3-5 days.

Find them today, and fingers crossed next weekend, at both Bradley Farm & RB Brew and Rabbits' Run Farm!

HONEY APPRECIATION POST!!!

September is National Honey Month and, before it’s over, we had to give the bees their flowers! Come September, beekeepers have made their final honey harvests and the bees are busy battening down the hatches for the winter months ahead.

We are always in awe of honeybees and the honey making process. Did you know?

🍯 A single hive typically produces 30-60lbs of excess, aka harvestable, honey!
🐝 A bee collects 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
🍯 Bees must visit around 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey!
🐝 Honeybees don’t hibernate! During the cold months, they cluster together and vibrate their flight muscles to generate heat. During this time, they survive by eating through around 80-100lbs of honey they made during the warmer months.

To make honey, honeybees collect nectar from flowers and store it in a special compartment in their stomach. As they travel back to the hive, enzymes in the bee’s stomach begin to break the sugar down into simpler compounds. In the hive, the bees regurgitate the honey into honeycomb cells for storage. Sucrose continues to break the nectar down while worker bees use their wings to fan the nectar evaporating excess water and concentrating the nectar into sweet, sticky, delicious honey.

Thank you, honey bees, and thank you, beekeepers!
