Hercules Grocery Hercules Fancy Grocery Mister Hercules, a west village institution, first opened his beer and grocery store in 1971 at bleeker and christopher street.

In 1997, determined to keep going, despite rent increases, he re-opened his shop at the corner of morton and 7th avenue. While there was crime in the neighborhood and in that particular area, Mister Hercules went out of his way to help a Japanese woman who eventually was murdered, and a local gypsy family, whose building had caught on fire. He never accepted money for his deeds. Hailing from Greece, Mister Hercules now resides in Queens.

vacancy insurance will surely keep the building vacant for several months while the management finds a suitable buyer for the space. i'm sure it'll be another terrible marc jacobs related shop. to add to the other hundred ones already infesting the once-charming neighborhood.

Beach Management has asked Mister Hercules to pay a 50% increase in rent, which is the reason the shop must close. a jump from $3100 to $6100.

Hercules Grocery will be closing down at the end of August. Please show mister Hercules your love and appreciation by paying him a visit and letting him tell you some stories. He would love that.
