The good news is that several vendors have plenty of bedding plants for those of us who planted just before Wednesday night's superstorm. Yes, that was me and probably many more. After the cucumbers, squash and some tomatoes were obliterated it is great to know we can still replant!
Asparagus is winding down and the heat from the last couple of days will hasten that. Ditto for rhubarb. Beet greens, chard and spinach are coming in fast.

Summer has finally arrived, at least that is what it feels like, this week. We have actually had a real Spring before moving into Summer and fruits and vegetables that like this, are very happy. Lots of excellent asparagus and rhubarb. Both of these freeze really well too. Spinach is beginning and other early veggies are taking off as well.
The rush now to plant that we can (hopefully) believe that we will not have another frost until fall, is on. Some of us planted early because it is always so tempting even though we know the risks, and now we need to replant. Lots of starter plants at the market. Many varieties of tomatoes, peppers, 2 kinds of eggplant, multiple herbs, squash plants and we still have at least 2 weeks to get them into the ground.
The advantage of buying local bedding plants is that they survive! They are bred to handle what our local climate throws at us.

The Psychic and Holistic Fair is also happening this weekend in Gardner Park. And some vendors will be found in different spots. Check out both events.

Summer has started - the first Wednesday market is this week. And the weather is improving. Slowly! It looks as though we have beaten back frosts and planting will be in full swing. Asparagus is in abundance and this year's crop is delicious. It likes a slower start, and so does rhubarb. Hopefully that will mean a great crop as well. Time to pick-up those bedding plants in the next couple of weeks.

Welcome to Season 2026.
It seems as though winter is here forever, no sign of Spring and then the rush begins. Sometimes the weather cooperates and we warm up gradually, consistently and veggies love it. Sometimes Spring is slow and cold and the vegetables take their time. We need the rain we are getting currently and it would be great if spring had sprung a little earlier!

However, lots of vendors will be here on Saturday and there will be some Spring vegetables.
For those wondering about the large machinery sitting in the market area, the City is working hard to be finished in plenty of time.
The good news is the Market will happen anyway and the long range forecast is for much warmer weather. Really!

Our opening this year coincides with Forage Fest, an event produced collaboratively with several different organizations. Workshops will occur all over Newport including at the Market in the morning. Learn how to process Flax and Nettles with the Old Stone House Museum members.
Horse Drawn Carriage Rides between Gardner Park and Downtown begin at 10:00 am.
Lots of events all day and at night.
