Aaaand, the other stop you make at the crack of dawn!!! A huge thank you to Delvin Farms and their willingness to help our non profit out!! Our big field is about to get a dose of healthy compost…to make our clay-ish soil healthier for fall in-ground planting! And our students are about to get dirty! Haha! Starting seeds, painting hives, and spreading compost! It’s a busy day at The Broody Hen! :)

✨Yesterday was a busy day between programming and it being opening day for the farm stand but, wow!

❤️Our students work hard and are learning so much. I couldn’t be more proud of them.

Yesterday our groups worked on:
🐐animal chores which included cleaning out the goat stall
🪏continuing to flip our compost pile
🌱preparing two raised beds for incoming sweet potato slips
🐶 groomed our farm dog, Ruby
🍓decorated our jam jars
🧄cleaned off garlic for the farm stand
🧑‍🌾 set the farm stand up and made it look nice
💰and learned about how much our items are, what we sell, and how to interact with customers at the stand.

It was such a great day! NEVER discount what our special needs friends can do! They are more capable than most realize!!❤️

And DONT miss the video I’m posting in the comments since fb won’t allow me to post a video with pictures.

I cannot believe it’s already June! This summer is flying by!! As we near our farm-to-table dinner (Aug 15.) you’ll begin seeing and hearing more about it. But, for now, I’d love to share the link and ask others who believe in our mission to also share this with their friends and family! You won’t want to miss this special evening of hearing more about the farm, our vision, and the lives it is affecting!

🚨Long shot request! We are processing 75 birds tomorrow. We thought we had a freezer, but it seems to have fallen through. We have someone offering us one but it’s in lewisburg. Is anyone available to make a run for us while we are at the farm working on chickens? OR anyone local have a deep freezer?

Today was day 2 of our Summer Work and Community program. On Wednesday we covered safety at the farm as part of our rotation.

Today we walked through the different tools we use in the garden and around the farm. Each student showed a picture to their peers and read what their tools were used for on the farm. Afterwards they did a tool scavenger hunt and everyone went searching for the tools.

Some of the ones that stumped our adults were t-posts and livestock panels. But once they figured them out, they knew them!

Many of our girls worked on moving the compost pile today - hard work, but so important for gardening and refreshing the soil. Compost needs time to decompose before being used as fertilizer. Fresh compost can contain too much nitrogen and be harmful to new plants. So we are working on creating a rotational compost system.

The downside? Shoveling one pile into another!

Our other crew worked on animal chores today and the important (but equally dirty work) of washing out the nesting bins. We clean these out to keep our eggs as clean as possible. Sometimes our hens lay more than eggs in their bin. Not good! It doesn’t always do the job, but we do what we can on our end to keep our eggs as clean as possible.

We are so proud of our adults, the hard work they put in while at the farm, and their continued willingness to simply show up! They are learning, they are working, and they are doing it with friends all while supported by some truly amazing leaders!

This is what we are working for! ❤️

Today was the first day of our summer program and WOW.

First off, we are working with some brave, smart, and super funny friends.

Some aren’t big fans of bugs, but they still pulled on gloves and harvested garlic anyway. Some learned about fire ants today for the very first time, and then immediately warned everyone when they spotted a mound. Others kept us laughing with jokes about the electric fence… “it was a shocking experience!” 🤣🤣🤣

These friends make me laugh so much. It’s honestly hard to have a bad day around them.

I’m always amazed by our friends and all they teach us. They remind us to love life, live it fully, be brave, laugh often, and try new things — even when they feel a little scary.

I’m so proud of our friends! ❤️

Another day at the farm!

My nemesis showed up today. 😩

For those who followed our journey last year, you’ll remember our battle with those little copper colored eggs that attach themselves to the backside of squash leaves. But, I have hope this year, because we have help! 🙌 I’m believing in the power of our friends, the planted dill, nasturtium, and of course…duct tape!

Additionally, I spotted some mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 excelling in one of the beds today. Apparently the rain, wood, and soil created the perfect environment. I pulled them out, but have no idea if they are edible (but no mushrooms are edible in my world 🤣)!

I then strolled to the back of the property and spotted baby cosmos sprouting! Also spotted miniature zinnias, sunflowers, lemon basil, and maybe even some celosia trying to make its way through the soil. I cannot wait to see this section in bloom! Crossing my fingers we get to have cut flowers this year at the stand and for our students to learn about floral arranging!

It’s such a fun time of year watching everything grow. And tomorrow we begin our summer programming!! ❤️

I love The Broody Hen!
