Dear Pecorino Peeps,
It is with a heavy yet grateful heart I am writing this message, so sit down and pour yourself a glass of wine (or two) while you read on…
After sixteen wonderful years, my family and I have decided that the Pecorino journey will come to an end this summer –
We are closing our doors on July 31, 2026.
As many of you know, we have been planning to eventually return to Europe and retire in Italy. We have been working on this dream for a long time and now feel the moment has come to take the very first steps toward making this a reality.
Of course, I wasn’t just planning to leave it all behind – no more crystal gouda for you, no hand-picked wines, no party platters or gift basket for the holidays?!
So, we wanted to make sure this wouldn’t happen.
All I can say it would have been my biggest reward to see our successful business continue to flourish under a new passionate leadership. We spent many months trying to navigate a path toward a sale, but sadly, we encountered complex logistical hurdles beyond our control that could not be resolved in the end. Despite all our efforts, our only remaining option is to proceed with closing the shop at its current location.
I can’t begin to say how much it hurts to leave this void.
From day one, in late summer of 2010, you embraced my idea of a little European specialty shop – you came, you shopped, you spread the word, you became friends. Often, we commonly referred to the cheese shop visits as therapy for everyone. The stories, the chats, the laughs and the sorrows, it was never always about cheese and wine. It felt like a little community, which became stronger year by year.
It hasn’t always been easy. Over the many years, we faced significant challenges – an aging building, changing landlords, seven years as the only business in the plaza, a pandemic, road closures, tariffs, and many more things you really don’t want to know about.
It took endless efforts to figure out how to deal with these problems (and the occasional panic attack), but there was always a solution! I could have not managed without my amazing family and staff, who have been there for me in good and in bad times, and never left anything to be criticized when I was gone (you know – pruning trees, picking olives, standing on ladders, bottling oil or building stone walls…).
Anyway, instead of transferring the business to a new owner, we are now approaching the finish line.
We are looking forward to the coming weeks, and to serve you with deepest gratitude and a full heart. The store will be open regular hours and, at least during the month of May, business will be as usual.
We would love to get the chance to thank you all in person and celebrate all those fabulous years we had together! You can still feast on our goodies while we have them, before we start parting with our carefully curated inventory, custom-made furniture, display keepsakes and memorabilia. There will be plenty of opportunities to use your gift cards!
Please stay tuned for updates as we publish plans for each stage of the final stretch through this newsletter and social media.
Thank you again, with all my heart, for what you have done and become for me.
A big hug, Simone
