This pile of wood was going to be firewood.

Then it became a reminder.

Then it became a landmark.

Then it almost became part of the ecosystem. 😆

A few years ago we piled this wood up with plans to cut and split it. Unfortunately, we stayed busy with everything else on the farm and never got around to it before it started to rot.

So instead of firewood, it became a cleanup project.

The good news? The area is finally cleaned up and looks a whole lot better.

Moral of the story: if you tell yourself you’ll do something “next weekend,” make sure you specify which year. 🤣

Looks like one of our Christmas trees has already found its first customer! 🐦🥚

While checking on the trees, we discovered this little bird’s nest tucked safely inside one of them with a few beautiful eggs waiting to hatch. Moments like these remind us that we’re not just growing Christmas trees—we’re creating a home for wildlife too.

We’ll be giving this tree some extra space and cheering on our newest farm residents from a distance. ❤️

Have you ever found a bird’s nest in an unexpected place?

BREAKING NEWS: The forklift has officially been evicted 🚜😂

This thing has been sitting here so long we were about ready to start charging it rent… or decorating it for Christmas 🎄

But we finally moved it out of the way, which means we’ve got more room for trees next year!

Only problem now… we actually have to plant them 😅

Be honest—how long do you think it’ll take us to fill this spot?
A) Next weekend
B) Before next Christmas
C) Same time the forklift would’ve moved on its own

March 21, 2020: We planted all these baby Christmas trees thinking we were about to be professionals… 🎄

The trees said, “Respectfully… no.” 💀

And when I say they all died… I mean not a single one stuck around. Not one. Zero survivors. It was basically a group resignation.

Pretty sure they had a meeting overnight and decided we weren’t management material. 😂

But hey — every expert was once a beginner… and apparently we just REALLY committed to the beginner phase.

So now we replant, learn as we go, and hope the next batch doesn’t unionize against us.

Stick with us… one of these years we’re gonna get it right 🌲😅

A little before & after progress here at The Ole Mill Yard.

We’ve been working on clearing the area to make room for more Christmas trees. What used to be overgrown and cluttered is slowly turning into the future home of rows of trees and holiday memories.

It may not look like much yet, but every stump removed and every load of dirt moved gets us one step closer.

Sometimes you have to start with a blank slate to grow something special.

Stay tuned… the future Christmas trees of The Ole Mill Yard will be growing here.

We spent the day augering holes and planting more Christmas trees… and apparently Georgia decided we made one just for her. 🐶🌲

While we were working, she climbed right into one of the freshly dug holes and made herself comfortable like it was her personal lounge chair. Safe to say she thinks she’s part of the planting crew here at The Ole Mill Yard.

Do you think we should leave this spot open and grow a Bulldog Tree instead? 😂

This pecan stump put up a serious fight… but we finally got it out! 💪🌳

It was way bigger than we expected and took a lot of digging, but clearing it means more room to plant future Christmas trees. 🎄

Now I’m curious… what would YOU have done with a stump this big?Burn it, dig it, leave it, or turn it into something? 🤔

Well… farming keeps you humble. 🌲🔥🌧️

We had a big pecan tree cut down to make room for more Christmas trees, and the stump was a little too much for our excavator to handle. So we decided to do it the old-fashioned way and burn it.

Late last night while it was burning good, a heavy rain rolled in out of nowhere and caught me completely by surprise.

The good news?
✔️ The fire wasn’t going anywhere.
✔️ The ground got a much-needed soaking.
✔️ Future Christmas trees are happy.

Sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned, but it all works out in the end. Just another day getting things ready for the seasons ahead at The Ole Mill Yard.

Progress may look messy now… but it’ll be worth it. 🎄💪

🎄 Big things are growing at The Old Mill Yard 🎄

Our Christmas tree farm is officially underway! While our farm-grown trees won’t be ready for a few more years, we’re busy planting, caring for the land, and building something we hope families will return to for generations.

✨ And here’s a little sneak peek — we will have Christmas trees available this season, even as our own trees continue to grow. More details coming soon!

Follow along for updates, behind-the-scenes farm moments, and everything leading up to our first Christmas season at The Old Mill Yard 🌲❤️
