Our Story
The USDA definition of a food hub is "a centrally located facility with a business management structure facilitating the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution, and/or marketing of locally/regionally produced food products.β Healthy Food Hub is a nonprofit, USDA listed, food hub with a focus on health, while servicing high-need communities.
We feature locally grown foods from producers; urban, suburban, rural and regional during our distribution times, known as Market Days. Black Oaks Center For Sustainable Renewable Living is cultivating growers to restore the local food network that was established over 70 years ago from the historic black farming community of Pembroke Township to Chicago. Our Lifeboat Regenerative Farmer Training Program is now accepting applications for 2018. Over 10 Sustainable Community Partners have grown their businesses through marketing and promotions of their local value added products over the to be 9 years on mission.
During Market Days, we provide a "one stop shopping" experience for our market goers, making available fruits and vegetables that do not grow in our region, as well as dry goods, meats, poultry, dairy, hygiene products, herbs, spices, teas, apothecary items and more.
