🐎✨ Honoring the Legacy of Black Horsemen in Marion County ✨🐎

This past February 28th, the Friends of Marion County Black Museum
proudly presented “The Legacy of Black Horsemen” — a powerful celebration of the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black cowboys, horsemen, and equine industry pioneers in our community.

Local legends including Stephen Hope, W***y Jones, Carla Carter, and Lugusta “Gus” Gray shared their journeys with horses and how their lives have been shaped by the equestrian world. Their stories remind us of the deep roots Black horsemen have planted in Marion County’s horse heritage.

The program also featured a special documentary screening that highlighted the historic role of Black horsemen in the early days of the racing and equine industries — honoring those whose work has helped shape the Horse Capital of the World.

We especially want to thank all our partners, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who made this inspiring event possible — your dedication keeps these stories alive and strengthens our community’s legacy for generations to come!

📍 Let’s continue celebrating and uplifting the remarkable contributions of our Black horsemen — their legacy truly lives on in every stride. 🙌🏾🐴

The 2026 Melanin Market Pop-Up Meets Marion County
Black History Month Tribute was more than an event — it was a celebration of culture, legacy, unity, and love. None of it would have been possible without the incredible support of this community.

To our participants and vendors, thank you for sharing your gifts, your businesses, your talents, and your passion. You brought life and excellence into the space.

To our sponsors and supporters, your generosity, belief, and partnership helped turn vision into reality. Your support did not go unnoticed, and we are deeply grateful for the investment you made in uplifting our community.

To every family, friend, and community member who came out, shopped, supported, learned, connected, and celebrated with us — you are the heartbeat of Marion County. Seeing generations come together to honor Black history right here in our community was powerful beyond words.

This tribute was not just about remembering the past — it was about standing together in the present and building intentionally for the future. Your presence, your energy, and your encouragement reminded us why this work matters.

Everything we accomplished was because of YOU.

Thank you for believing in the vision. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for standing in unity. Thank you for celebrating culture, legacy, and progress with us.

With love, appreciation, and continued commitment to our community,

This year, we don’t just observe Black History Month — we celebrate 100 years of honoring , resilience, culture, and legacy.

For a century, our stories have been preserved, uplifted, and passed forward — from the fields to the classrooms, from the movement to the marketplace, from ancestral wisdom to future innovation.

Black history is American history.
Black history is living history.
Black history is celebrated every day.

As we honor this 100-year milestone, we recommit to telling our stories boldly, supporting Black communities intentionally, and planting seeds for the next generation to thrive.

Here’s to the past that shaped us, the present that empowers us, and the future we are building — together. 🖤🌱
