Ursula’s Farm is shaping up to be quite an awesome working farm thanks to the dedication, passion, and knowledge of our Farm Manager, Alice, and her hard work along with our two farm apprentices Mary and Gail. They’ve been putting in long hours to get to some of the photos you see here. Beds are prepped. The soil is incredible!
The heavy plastic use here is to combat the w**d pressure, namely the reed canary grass. We don’t have the people power to w**d all day long so plastic really comes in handy for w**d suppression.
So far they’ve sown pumpkins, various winter squash including hubbards, acorn, and gete okosomin, the Cherokee trail of tears black beans, onions, and buckwheat cover crop.
We are also working towards a large planting of strawberries which will be a community planting day (stay tuned) because we cannot wait to share the farm with you!
Luppino did a fantastic job on the gravel parking pad and Superior Fence installed our 10foot security fence which is where the orchard and u-pick strawberries will be.
Next, we will have electricity turned on and getting the well working again.
Support from Boreal Waters and NRCS is making this possible! We’re also grateful for our internal tribal partnerships with Bad River Recycling, Facilities, and Roads as well as our external partnerships with UW-Ext, WTCAC, Savannah Institute and more.

We love seeing this farm come to life, and again, can’t wait to share it with you! 🌱

We love feasting with you! Thank you to all who came to celebrate the bounty of our wild harvested and foraged Spring foods. Chef Pete cooked a delicious feast! Chi Miigwech! Some of our native, wild harvested foods we enjoyed which were all harvested from Bad River were:

🌱walleye
🌱smoked sturgeon
🌱smoked sucker
🌱wild turkey
🌱ramps
🌱fiddleheads
🌱dandelion greens
🌱manoomin
🌱maple syrup

Miigwech to our instructors Maria and JD for showing us how to make maple sugar and candies. Miigwech to Robert and Dale for the herbal medicine goodie bags and information on various plant medicines! Miigwech to David for sharing a fish cleaning demonstration with freshly caught Lake Superior trout. Miigwech to Bill Roundwind for giving the prayer.

We loved sharing in this meal and good time together. Now we look forward to summer and the bounty ahead!

All raised beds are filled with soil 💪🏽 we’re very thankful for Russ donating his time to Food Sov. He and Randy worked hard to get it done! Also, chi Miigwech to Roads dept for loaning us their dump truck.

Dirt is now available for tribal members! The pile near the Casino is first come first serve.
