Picking the last of our Montmorency Sour Cherries today. Thinking of juicing & making gummies. The juice is jam-packed with vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, manganese, calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3s and omega-6s… It’s also loaded with antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and immune-boosting properties. There’s even evidence that tart cherry juice can help you get a better night’s sleep due to the levels of melatonin in the juice.

There’s good reason Bonnie Dehn is known as the “Minnesota Herb Lady.” She and her husband Bob have operated Dehn's Garden in Andover since 1979. For many years, herbs grown on their farm made up 98% of packaged fresh herb sales in the five-state area.
Innovators in all they do, the Dehns began growing hydroponically in the 1980s, were running a family farm with their kids in tow, “before family farms were the thing to be,” as Bonnie puts it, and were among the charter members who founded the Minnesota Grown program.
The Dehns decided to go into herbs because they’re lighter than the sacks of potatoes Bonnie threw around growing up on her father’s dairy and potato farm and the Dehns saw a market opportunity. Bonnie said, “Looking around at farmers’ markets, no one else was doing it. Most people didn’t know what fresh herbs were. They were used to the dried stuff in bottles. There was a lot of education involved, but there was also opportunity. You started to see fresh basil, dill, and parsley in the early 80s. Warehouses and restaurants started to pick up on the trend, and it continues to build to this day.”

Leuer Gardens out of Mankato is a family operated farm that just started on their third growing season. Hilary Leuer, the owner, operator, and self-described “primary-source-of-getting-things-done” grew up with horses and a love of agriculture. Her husband Bob grew up on a dairy farm and now works for the (full disclosure! 😊) Minnesota Department of Agriculture, as well as on the farm in his free time. They have two children, Clare, 8, who says her favorite crops are tomatoes and flowers, while Freddy, 6, loves sweet corn and broom corn!

Stopping by the foodoont Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings to pick up seasonal produce and fresh baked goods has been a long standing tradition for Faribault and other area residents for over 50 years. Donna and Russ Bauer are in their 31st year serving as managers of this successful, thriving farmers’ market. The market is a traditional local market and all vendors live within a 15 mile radius of Faribault. All produce is grown by local farmers while baked goods, canned goods and crafts are personally handmade by the the vendors who sell them. 🙌
On Sept. 16, Faribault Farmers’ Market will be partnering with Rice County Public Health SHIP for a free and family-friendly event. There will be a bounce house, lots of fun activities, information tables, free face painting and farm animals! Don’t miss this fun event!
