We're holding our breath, waiting to see if we're really going to have strawberries πŸ“πŸ“ We planted 1300 plants last August, and they survived the deep cold of this winter and the unexpected cold snaps this spring. If they can survive the woodchucks too, we'll have some ripe berries soon!

Thank you to Mrs. Niece's class from Olean High School for spending so much time at the farm this spring! We have loved hosting you. We enjoyed a couple of weeks of extra special gatherings, including setting up a picnic in the reflection area, and learning about sheep and wool processing. Many thanks also to Kate Brelje for the fiber arts demonstration.

We look forward to welcoming you back next year, Olean City School District!

Canticle Farm staff Zeb and Taylor send an enormous THANK YOU to Dirt Rich Farm of Springville for reserving cherry tomato seedlings for us to purchase! We tried grafting tomato plants for the first time this year. The plants looked healthy on day 3 after grafting, but then went rapidly downhill to no survivors by day 7. We had set aside lots of extra slicing tomatoes, but we lost the majority of our cherry tomato seedlings. We are so grateful for our fellow farmers, Laura and Ryan, who came through to save the day with their fantastic certified organic seedlings. If you need plants for your garden, stop by their farm in Springville; their big plant sale was last weekend but they still have some plants remaining!

We've had an interesting weather week, with a very hot Monday & Tuesday followed by chilly mornings and cloud cover. Fortunately, average conditions in the high tunnels have been just right for the beets, and we harvested them for the first time this week. They're one of Isaac's favorites, so be sure to stop by before he eats them all!

We're so glad to welcome Isaac Spaeth onto our staff as our Distribution and Community Engagement Coordinator! Isaac is a familiar face to many people in our community from his years of work in music education. As a member of our education committee, he has been instrumental in launching our gardening workshops this past year. You'll see Isaac regularly at our market and can ask him all of your gardening questions!

Isaac is also our Implementation Specialist for moving forward on our perennial crops plan for Canticle Farm North, so you'll see him tending the grounds and the new orchard and riparian buffer plantings.

Those gorgeous Brandywine tomatoes behind him are available at our market today, by the way -- we grew a little extra for everyone!
