One of the best parts of what we do isnā€™t just the chickensā€”itā€™s the people we get to meet along the way.

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Nicole and her husband, Julian, who came out to the farm and took home three Silkies. We even snapped a photo together with their new chicks before they headed home. Their excitement was contagious, and it was such a joy talking chickens, sharing stories, and helping them add to their flock.

Moments like these remind us why we started The Hen Den of Oriental in the first place. What began as a small dream has grown because of the support of our community and the wonderful people weā€™ve met along the way.

To everyone who has purchased eggs or chicks, joined our waitlist, shared our posts, or simply encouraged us on this journeyā€”thank you. Your support means more than you know, and we truly couldnā€™t do it without you.

Today reminded me of something important.

Deara asked me to stop by Paulā€™s Produce on Highway 55. To be honest, it wasnā€™t on my agenda. My plan was to head home and mow the yard.

When I walked in, David hugged my neck and said, ā€œYou know I lost Melba.ā€ My heart hurt for him. David and Melba were married for 52 years and spent much of that time working side by side at Paulā€™s Produce, serving our community.

We stood there talking about old timesā€”the lumber company that used to be down the road from where he lives, the old train station that once stood there, and the cattle farm that was across the street. It was one of those conversations that reminds you how much history is tucked away in the places we pass every day.

Then I paused for a moment and noticed something.

The smell.

It smelled just like the produce stands my Granny Yates used to take me to when I was a little girl down in Cedar Point. In an instant, memories came flooding back. Itā€™s amazing how a simple smell can take you right back to a moment in your life that you havenā€™t thought about in years.

What started as a quick stop became one of the best parts of my day.

It was good spending time with David. Heā€™s full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from a life well lived. Sometimes weā€™re so busy rushing to the next thing that we miss the conversations, memories, and people right in front of us.
